I let the eggs get ripe as long as the plant is going, and the egg turns a yellowish-orange color. The ones that I harvested last year seems like they were very viable as a lot of those grown here were from my seeds from the swap last year. I think I collected the seeds in September.

That one on the bottom right is almost ready, I would let the color get just a bit deeper before harvest. Then just cut it in half and scoop out the seeds, I lay them on paper towels to dry thoroughly (a week or two???) , then package up.

I still have viable seeds from about 4 years ago... but unlike mel (sorry!), I let them get totally dark brown and shriveled up dry before I harvest the seeds. That's how I know that they are finished maturing.

Thanks girls, I will let the eggs go to a golden yellow or so. I will be saving wonder egg seeds and many other types for the seed swaps this fall. If you're interested in swapping just pm me. If I deadhead the one plant will it keep producing flowers? This is my first experience with wonder eggs.....any help is appreciated. Thanks, Kratz7

Tuesday I had to re-pot 2 of my Wonder egg plants. it was touch & go for a few days--but root hormone does wonders--& today i am glad to report that the 3 I repotted are douing well. I had them all outside--but my yard is still the remants of an old field, & so it is unvelievable hot. I guess I will try again in a few days--& do it gradually. I have all the "how to rules" recopied into my "Garden Helper Book".

Yesterday I put the 2 Wonder Egg plants that I had NOT transplanted outside (east facing covered porch) so the bees could do their thing. They are NOT liking the heat. I am having to constantly water them. 2 of them seem to have several scorched leaves. I am thinking I should bring the 3 of them in permanently. But if I do so could someone give me pollination directions?? I would so like to get eggs----- FYI: the 3 in the house are healthy & happy facing west. They get morning sun each day. (I close the vertical blinds to my glass sliding doors at noon each day.--I open them about 5:30--6:00am. But as I do not let bees into the house------

i hand pollinated [ havent seen as many bumble bees this year i use to get hundreds, so far only a few this year] i know mark also hand pollinated, not shure how he did it, but i used a small make up brush, and just brushed in all the flowers a few times, going from one flower to the next.

Christy - that is too funny - take a pic of the 2 side by side? Here are mine today - all the eggs are on the plant that I overwintered - none of the new seedlings are large enough to have eggs this year - too bad!

Very nice Lynne! Mine are actually still alive, with tons of new growth and flowers[and two new eggs] since I replanted them a a 10gallon pot outside... I keep losing all the larger leaves though... I still need to post a pic, too 3 of my eggs are a deep yellow... should I harvest them now, or wait 'till they dry up?

thanks penny, i still got other eggs, good thing i put em in the basket instead of the ground, im gonna bring em in when it starts to get cold n see how long i can keep em going mark im not shure, i think it was mel who went ahead n harvest her seeds then someone else said waite till they dry up, i know mels seeds were good cause thats what im growing, but this being my first time i think ill wait till they look like there dryin up, cause im not shure how golden they should get, before harvesting?

I am the one who said to wait until the eggs get dried out and a bit shriveled up. I've been doing it this way for about 5 years now, and my seeds are always viable. I'm not sure how they would do, if you take them before the eggs dry out.

So, I had almost given up hope on my wonder eggs doing anything this year. I had transplanted them outside and they've been surviving but that's about it. Yesterday I noticed that one of them had a flower on it! I'm so excited! I just might get an egg afterall.

I finally got some pics! Mine,as you know, have been outside for most of the summer now... since then, they have stopped losing so many leaves, and there is a bunch of new growth, and flowers, and eggs... the whole deal Just went outside and took some pics.. here they are: you can see all the new, greener, growth My darkest egg: how much longer 'till it starts drying up?

In my above pics, the egg in the middle pic/bottom left side started to split open down the middle... what should I do? pick it, and save the seeds now? or wait for it to brown more?

hmmmm - mine never split open like that - did they get a lot of rain water recently? I know my tomatoes sometimes do that when they are too full of water. Mark - does your mom maybe have an old piece of pantyhose that she doesn't need? You can make a cover for the egg out of it - slip it around the egg, and just tie it around, so you don't lose any seeds. That's what I was told to do for my datura seed pods and it worked well.

I was thinking; because eggplants, melons, tomatoes are so high in water content, if they get too much, they will 'burst their skins'

Well finally--here is--sorry it took me so long to learn how to do this--thanks to you all for being so patient!!! and BYW--I had just washed off all the leaves--I had what I think was spider mites?? (white teeny flying things) but the white dots stayed, don't know why--but the good news is, they are no longer there. Ok--so I tried 2 times rotate the picture--(it is right in my photobucket album)--but when i copy it it comes out like this--so gang---lean over

. I wish mine had survived. I am definately going to try again this year tho. Most of mine were doing well at the beginning but they all ended up dying. But to all of you who were able to grow them, they are looking awesome and you have given me hope to try it again.

Nuria: I cannot tell you how often I have had mine in the sink spraying them down with water. And then there is the almost daily watering--not too much--not too little. then there is the taking them out--bringing them in and washing them down to get rid of the "pests". But they are so "unique" i think they are well worth my time. next time though, I think I am going for just 3 plants--if they make it good--if they do not--well there is next time!! If all continues to go well, I should have plenty of seeds to share--for sure!!!

none of my eggs split, i picked em off last night, cause the plant died off, my golden eggs that have been there the longest had lots of seeds sproutin inside em,, my golden eggs that were the second to longest were good seeds, only 1 or 2 seeds looked like they were startin to sprout, also cut the white-ish golden eggs n those seeds look good but im gonna do a seed test to find out if there realy good or not.
