after watching this topic i got the urg to sew again, so i started another quilt
my cable thing that plugs into my cam/puter broke, so gotta get another one of those things,
i always wanted to do a pitchure quilt, ya know were you take your pics n copy em on that "iron on paper " n iron em on white cotten to quilt in with your quilt, my cuz did that but her hole quilt was all pitchures, i was thinking about sewing frames n such around the pics. anyone done that?
I haven't done a picture quilt yet but I think a frame around each picture is an excellent idea. That way your pictures will be easier to see I think.
This weekend 7 quilt shops in my area are having a "Jingle Bells" shop hop. Each shop has Christmas fabric at a special price for anyone who purchased a $3 "passport". In one shop I bought 5 fabrics all with the same color blue in them and plan on making a "Blue Christmas" quilt. I can't wait to get started!

Fat quarters sell around here for $2.50 but are on sale sometimes for only $1.00!

Glenda you have 7 quilt shops to choose from! NO fair! I have 1, then JoAnns, an arts & crafts shop called Ben Franklins, not alot or highest quality, & lowly Walmart.
Oooh Sarah, thats an idea. Or a 'craft' swap. So people who dont sew but do paint or knit can play too!
Thats funny i just put cat fabrics on my 'wish list" on another site. {you make a list and random people may or may not randomly send you an item on your list}
ok, momma mouse has to weigh in here. first, does hand beading a wedding veil count as sewing? if so, i'll post pictures later...
and for the swap/tag, if y'all put it together by way of guidelines, ideas on how to run it, and such, let me know, and i'll be happy to be the admin in charge of monitoring it (a site requirement). just someone email or pm me so i know to work on it.
would say that hand beading a wedding gown is definitely sewing. Sewing is not always done on a machine. You used a needle and thread right? I'd love to see a picture of it.
About the "Jingle Bells" shop hop I was talking about earlier:
2 of the shops are in the county I live in, 2 are across the Ohio River in Indiana, and 3 are in the county I have to drive through to get to Indiana.
Except for Wal-mart and the two small quilt shops nearby, the closest fabric shop to me is about 20 miles away. In fact just about any shop of any kind is at least 15 miles away. I live in a small town about 20 miles from downtown Louisville and Louisville claims to be the 16th largest city in the US.

I'd be very interested in a swap, round robin, or tag.
Jiffy suggested earlier that maybe we could include all crafts. Then we could specify which "craft" we would like to receive.
Anyone else interested?

I never did a 'tag' game. I dont know how. I've done round robins though and swaps. Anyone have a prefrence?
1) A Round Robin is; person #1 starts it, fills a box(uually flat rate so everyones postage is equal)with, in this case, craft items, fabric, yarn, patterns, coupons (a coupon is an index card with say a book that wont fit in the box or a large piece of fabric that would take up too much room. If you want whats on the coupon you take out the coupon & tell the person who has the item you want it and they send it directly to you) etc. sends it to person #2. Who opens it looks through takes what she wants leaves the rest and fills the box the rest of the way up with her goodies and mails it to person 3. The last person then mails it to person #1 who gets whatever is left. A quick questionnaire is helpful so if ie, I have a ton of fuschia yarn and noboy likes or wants it I dont put it in and waste time/space/postage. A Round Robin is NOT a way to get rid of junk, please!!
2) A Swap is; All our names are given to the moderator. We all get assigned one person then with a quick questionnaire we customize a box for our secret recipient.
3) tag I have to go look at seed tag and see if I 'get it'
I keep saying questionaire because it is alot easier to pick things someone will really like and use if we know what she(or he) likes. If someone hates purple she wont want to get a boxload of purple fabric. And please dont put "I like everything as an answer. That drives me nuts.
AND if you know other crafters send them down here to see if they want to join!
OK It looks like tag and a round robin are pretty much the same thing. I'm going to start a seperate thread to see if theres interest. Then we can set rules and if is RR or a swap. K?
This what I made for Angelblossom's granddaughters with my serger. This shows it's not just for hems.
I'm sorry the picture is sideways. I've done everything I can think of to turn it here. In my camera, on my computer, and in photobucket it is turned upright. Only here is it sideways.

I had asked for "basketcase" instead of jayhawk but I guess it was too long.

Ohhhh I just found the garment Bag you made Ambroja's daughter Glenda,!! How you were describing it on the phone is nothing in comparison so seeing it!! That is soooooooooo Nice!!!! Did you ever post a pic of your Grandson in his Christening Gown??
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
i dont have any pics of what im workin on right now, hopefuly sometime this week i can get one, so i drew the pattern in art
there all 2inch blocks, ive got 3 done so far one with brown backround& brownish flowers in middle one red backround& red/blue stars in middle one white backround& plad in middle gotta cut up more scraps to start another one
Here is my Quilt, which is all finished except for putting a binding around the edge. It has been like this for about two years!!!
Each square is a triangle of dark and light sewn together. It got boring to me so when I layed it out, ever once in awhile I would turn the corners of light, or dark, together to give it randomly scattered dark and light squares. I think it makes the whole quilt more interesting.
It has a thick filling, and is VERY warm. I usually use, and prefer, a thinner filling for a thinner and lighter-weight quilt.
Thanks! I like to do crazy quilts, with all the embroidery and applique and embellishments on them!!! Here are some pics of a Pink & Blue one I'm starting.
These pictures really don't do justice to all the embroidery I have on these pieces!!!
On this piece see the musical notes I embroidered for the Bird?
And on this one I appliqued butterflies, and then embroidered there flitting path!
Shirley's quilt blocks are gorgeous!! I saw many of them when we met in Cincinnati in May.
She is right when she said that the pictures don't do them justice. If I remember right she does almost all (if not all) of the sewing by hand and does very impressive work.

Thanks Sarah. Each square has some applique, but lOTS of embroidery! I'll show you a quilt that I am appliquing flowers all around the border!!! It will be nice when finished, but it is a pain, and I'm getting so tired of doing it!!!
Here is a square from my red and black crazy quilt. (I have different one in Triss's Latest Projects.) I appliqued her hat on, and her dress; made her a beaded fringe for her dress; and did lots of embroidery...flowers, and her face and hair.

I always wanted to do a crazy quilt , till i saw all the embroidery detail that went into it. The embroidery is done just on the top layer right, not through the top batting and bottom.??
NO....you don't have to do all that stuff!!! Here is one I'm working on for one of my grandsons and I'm not going to add anything to it, just sew the squares together.
No! I machine sew all the pieces of fabric together!
Except on quilt which I'm sewing every piece together to make a star square, and then I am quilting each square as I go. Then I will machine stitch the top of the squares together in strips and then hand stich the back of all the squares together.
dang! those`are so cool. i like them better with the embroidey if i was to do one for myself tho'.
Oh I like all that pretty stuff on one for myself, or any female. Those plain was could be done in rich fabrics, though, like velvet and satin, and really would have to do all that hand stuff to look pretty; but even so would become more gorgeous with embroidery and applique on them!!
The unembellished ones can be done in plaids, like what I'm doing, or out of wools; for a homespun look.
I am going to use an unbleashed muslin backing for my grandsons, whih I am going to tea dye. You CAN tea dye the whole quilt!! Makes it look older.
Those are really neat too, Shirls. How do you sew the pre-quilted squares together and not have a seam showing? I've always been confused by that. You're crazy quilts reminds me a lot of a paper technique called iris folding. I use it in my scrapbooks quite a bit, so I really like it!!
You have to put two squares with the tops together then sew JUST the two tops together...NOT the filler, NOT the backing. Do a strip of those the width you want. Tthen sew all the strips together the same way. When you look at the quilt from the front it will be all sewn together. When you look at it from the back it will be a mess!! I sew the back, ENDS going across, and then the long edge of each ROW going across. I tuck the batting in and turn under one edge, pinning it down over the raw edge of the other square. Then whip-stitch it, or sew it neatly..hiding the stitches. After you get the rows done, doing one square to the other, THEN you do each whole long row across, tucking under and pinning down each LONG row, and stitching it.
Is all of that understandable? It's hard for me to describe something like that in writing, not knowing if the other person is visualizing the same thing I am. If you want more explaination you can PM me and I'll give you my phone number.
I think you're right, Wrennie. BUT the only way I can machine quilt is if the pieces are small. I've hand quilted one to many quilts as far as my fingertips are concerned. It may just be easier to whipstitch a seam together instead of going through the top/bottom/batting layers.
I love making the tops, but don't really enjoy trying to get the needle through all layers to quilt. But those individual squares ARE quilted through, on that star one.
So, when quilting the squares, are you careful not to get within a quarter inch or so of the edges for your seam allowance when sewing it all together?
No! I machine sew all the pieces of fabric together!

finaly got a pic of my stars shirls!
i havent worked on em since ive been doing my craft for the swap, but now that im done i should start on the stars again, how are yours going?
thanks jiffy, i made that all outta scrap meterial, didnt buy a pice of frabrick for it a couple seems came undone so i had to fix it, still need to put the back on it guess i sewed to close to the edges n it didnt hold
Christy, that quilt is beautiful!!! You go girl on those stars!
I haven't done anything on ANY of my quilts I have shown in a LOOOOOOng time! My stars are all sitting in a box....just waiting for more. I don't know how any of you get anything done, being on this forum!! This wonderful place has simply been my downfall!!!!
Is there a 'rehab' for forum addicts??!! I need one bad!!!
here is one of my christmas projects from last year. I sent everyone a card to send me their favorite photos and i would make them a wall hanging of my choice. This is a cardinal that like a red truck so much he pecked at the the side mirrors daily. I love putting pictures on quilts. I am now making a quilt for my daughter who won a moose lottery last year and actually got one! I am putting the borders on it now. It rained all day here Friday and I really enjoyed getting back into my sewing room. all of your projects are lovely.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raised me up to be more than I can be.
I can see the quilt ok on my post. I did move my photo around to sub albums Sorry you can't see it should i try to post it again. I guess they couldn't see my goose picture on the other forum either

These are some coasters I made with my serger. The lines and the edging are done on the serger and the colors are done with fabric markers. I also "colored" black stitch lines because the stitching showed the fabric underneath. The fabric is white flowers on a white background and the flowers absorbed the fabric marker differently than the background.
I think these would look just a good with regular plain white fabric. I also think these could be made on a sewing machine using a wide stitch and a stitch to finish the edge.

They were very easy, it took longer to "color" them than it did to sew them!

im like you shirls! i start so many things all at once
i started this yesterday, dont know what its called, [wear ya cut shapes n sew them on to another fabric] i never done it before n wanted to try it, i use to just sew pics with colored yard, but im liking doing it this way too,
started to add leaves,
now that i got a feel for it im ready to take off with it, n do things like this for my quilts

I have been studying about sewing liturgical vestments .... or the robes and stoles you see in churches.... particularly in Episcopal or Catholic churches, although other ministers often use them too.
I started learning about the history of these vestments, and then I started trying to learn something of the fabrics which are known as Ecclesiastical Fabrics. The fabrics are exquisite, but depending upon which manufacturor using which fibers for quality, the same fabric name can be $10 a yard or hundreds of dollars a yard.
So, I've been hesitant to get started, although the kit to make my first stole (the long thing a few inches wide ministers wear over the shoulders dangling down the front) is reasonably priced, just the thought of cutting into truly valuable fabric scares me.
If I ever get ready to make vestments for a church, the fabric dealer would send me (on a lending basis!) large fabric swatches to take into the church building. The fabrics used are tricky to work with and you should view them in the light you will be using them, and view them from the distance the people will be seeing them, to make sure you've got it right for that building.
Here is a link so you can see some of these exquisite fabrics...
If you visit this site, you will see a list of types of fabric down the left hand side of the page. Click on any of the fabric names and it will show you large samples of these fascinating, complex fabrics.... Damasks, Brocades, Brocatelles (with luxurious metallic threads added) and all kinds of things you won't see at a typical fabric shop. I can wander around these fabric sites forever!

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart? The other heart was given to another for us to find.
But I go to the catholic church and we don't use that type of vestments at all. Ours are solids decorated with metallic like gold threads in various designs.
Maybe the pope may use that ????///Another thing, the garment used in church are also seasonal and you have to be familiar with our calendar.
No harm meant, just never see it used here. Roman catholic...Greek catholic might .
Yes, Dodge, Vestments are seasonal and one must follow the church calendar to know when to use which color! It is a very complex topic! Also, preferred style of vestments depend on Region of the country AND the wealth of the congregation. Some areas have more modest vestments, others more plain, but they all follow the calendar.
Every three years at National Convention for the Episcopal church, vestment designers bring their latest designs and fabric inspiration. Although the fabric may be a custom weave or blend, it still must follow the colors of the seasons and there are traditional weaves that people prefer. I've never seen the designer vestments, but I've heard the really exquisite ones can cost thousands of dollars which is out of the question for most parishes and most peoples taste and good sense!
