Betty: Glad you got your hummers back. I have too!! Mine came back about a week ago. I have one, that I named "Pete". Pete is short & fat, which is how I know it is him. He sits on my tomato cage which is near one of my HB Feeders. DH says he is guarding "his" feeder. (And that he is.) He works hard to keep all "interlopers" away.
I am going to keep a log so I know when they leave.

Glad your hummers came back. This is my second time trying to find some. They finally came around this year. I have four feeders and they still seem to fight with each other. It's so much fun to watch them. How did you ever get those great pictures?
Hummers are easy to photograph. They aren't scared of you, so you set yourself up at optimum camera range and when the hummer comes to drink, you start flashing as he hovers in mid air. Here's a couple of pictures I took at my feeders.

hey thorny, i have experienced hummers that werent afraid in the past and actually had them come down close and actually hover 6 inches from my face, but now that i think about it,they were all females. for some reason this year, most of my visitors this year are males and they really dont like to be watched. they will not come to the feeders or let me watch them from 10 feet away without flying away. and they are deffinately guarding thier feeders as i can look out the window and see the little sentrys. they all seem much smaller then the ones ive had in the past. could it be that im dealing with a new generation?
id appreciate some of your knowledge on this! i am kinda puzzeled. also ,in addition to the downy woodpeckers feeding at my feeders, ive got some king of birds showing up that llok like large sparrows with an orangish hue to thier feathers. what could they be? they are going thru a large feeder nearly every couple days despite having a full birdbath refreshed every day with fresh water. doesnt bug me at all but im amazed to see so many birds i dont associate with hummingbird feeders actually feeding at them.
