I planted a japonese anenome last august in a HUGE (3 cubic foot) pot and it still hasnt' come up yet in zone 5 - is it a late bloomer? When should I throw in the towel that it died - or is it still coming?

Japanese anemonies bloom in late summer/early fall, but they start growing in spring. Mine are already coming up quite a bit, but I'm in a warmer zone and it's been unseasonably warm as well the whole month of March, so yours may still come up...give it a little more time.

Mine's no where's to be seen yet..
I am in growing zone 5 and mine hasn't
even peaked it's tiny head out of the dirt..

I don't expect it for at least a month I'd say..
Give or take a week...
