Hello everyone! I just registered and totally new to this forum. I'm living in Manchester in the U.K.and love gardening. I have bought many lovely flowers and shrubs for my front and back gardens. I'm not sure which forum I should go to ask a question about Fremontodendron 'california glory'. It says they are short-lived shrub on some websites, what does that mean? Is it not suppose to come back year after year?

Welcome to our Pod..........Just hop in and jive.

Shrubs are mostly hardy perennials......Which means they come back each year from the roots ......
I would think short lives may mean it is an annual, and only lives one year?

YOur in the right spot .........If you get mixed up here , they will move you to the proper place......

fremontodendron is a socal shrub. it may grow in your zone more like a perennial than a shrub.

there are plants in ne usa that are perennials, but in socal they are evergreen.
ex. yucca, daylily.

RugbyHukr, thank you for your information. It seems doing well in my back garden although it's a young plant. I'll see what happens next year.

Dodge, I will show some photos next Summer as most my plants and trees haven't established well yet :))

It had been raining for two months in the U.K., summer just started here. I cherish and hope to enjoy two months gardening. Hope we all have a good summer.

Glad your able to plant.. I suppose there isnt alot of foul snow like we have. We get 5 Months to enjoy our gardens.. Well 4 really.. One is a beginner month.

It snowed a few hours only last winter :( I may go back China this winter with family. That is where I originally come from and it normally snows heavily :)

I have eight roses, one acer tree, wysteria, india summer(campsis), hydrangea, phlox, weigela, potentilla, buddleja, lavatera,astilbe, bleeding heart, plum tree. I also planted runner beans, swiss chard, chinese baicai, spinach. What flowers and shrubs have you got? Any nice pictures to show us?

Here's
Blue black salvia
green amranthus
spider zinnia.........I love them all.

I have so many flowers and shrubs, it would take all day to tell.
I do have astibile,orange roses, blue rose, red stripie rose,

lots of Lilys,geraniums,brown eyed daisy vine and plant
hibiscus, babys breath,dahilias,cypress vine, moss roses, portula,lilacs, grape arbors, sho fly..

Like I say it can go on an on........I have to take a note pad and run around the yard.
I am on a small farm.

Very very impressive, especially blue black salvia! Mine are only ordinary red salvias,but I like them.

To upload you hit Browse and it will get you to where you store your photos on the computer .........

Now can you find the box on the right which says BROWSE....

Click on browse and that will take you on the left, another box which will ask you where your photos are located......
Mine is usually...........Where you click on the arrow at the top Under PICTURES.

iF YOU GET TO YOUR Pictures......click on the one you want and say Open.

Open is on the bottom of where your photos are..

See how far you can get on this and write back if your confused..

This should take you the place to add photos.
The word is BROWSE ........................NOT BROWSER.

I can offer some thoughts on Fremontodendron it is a native of California and as such is not use to getting water in the summer. It is very common for California natives to expire after 4 or 5 years if they get summer water (Ceanothus is notorious for this). In my experience with Fremontodendron if it gets "plenty" of water it has difficulty remaining upright and I have seen them fall over and uproot themselves. In California in a "native" type of settings I would expect the plants to live 15-25 years. On a separate note the leaves have small hairs that are irritating so ware long sleeves and gloves when working with this plant, happy gardening!

Thank you for your advice. It seems my Fremontodendron is dying :( All the leaves have curled up and look droopy. I did water it a few times. Do you say it doesn't need water at all?

That is easy if your already on Photobucket.

Now when you go to your photos, see the photo and all the words below it.

Go to the very last one and Highlite it
How to highlite( Hold the left most button while you click on the bottom line)
It turns Yellow.
Click on Copy

It copys it to your mouse.

Now go to garden helper and get on this place where we are here .

Just use the mouse again and click paste.

The first photo is a dwarf strawberry, they're trouble-free and spread easily. The second one is a common variety of Chinese vegetable called Baicai, then runner beans and swiss chards. They all grow bigger now and I'm harvesting my beans everyday :))
