Yep my Epiphyllum Oxypetallium suprised the daylights out of me today.. It was headed for the trash, and someone said it did not bloom. I am a believer................now...... Maybe 2maro it will open up.. hope so.
Anyone else have one? Mine came from Texas about 6 years ago.
I once had this. My dad told me it only open flower during the night and is very beautiful. I got to see it and really are beautiful. I didn't know the english name of it and now I do. +) Thank you for sharing.
we usually call them night blooming cereus here. but that is just one of many cultivars. they are gorgeous! i have a couple, but mine haven't bloomed for me.
I'm sorry you missed the show. You've only got one night to catch it, and it's usually late at night. If you don't know it's happening, it's very easy to miss. I've missed several blooms in the past. I can't tell you the number of times I didn't even know there was a bud let alone that it was blooming until I could smell the perfume from the flower. It's very strong and intoxicating. Mine was kept indoors so the aroma was a dead give away.
I can't recreate the smell for you, but here are a few pictures of what it looks like in bloom.
Bud about to open in a day or so
Epi in full bloom
Epi Blossom: close-up
Composting is more than good for your garden. It's a way of life.
From what I understand in the epi forum is it blooms around 8 pm& averages staying open 6-8 hours.I have Epi strictum and it opens later more around 11 pm and they last 10-12 hours. If you have other epis in bloom at same time its possible they would cross. My strictum is self fertilie. It also gave a 2nd bloom.I got more seed pods set on 2nd flush(versis the 1st 6 blooms 2 seed pods)I don't recall if Oxy is on self fertilie list. They did the list as all latin names. There are epis that open in day time and some that will hold flowers open 2-3 days.My new cuttings are 3 day bloomers& 1 night bloomer....and not white.
I'd like to have oxy.I do believe its one that will rebloom if happy.
I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!
