I haven't done much in my garden. I will be taking it all down this weekend. I still have a ton of tomatoes left on the plants, but it's gonna start getting really cold and even though I have built them a little hoophouse of sorts, and it has kept the frost off of them, it's not the best and cold air is still getting in. So in I will be bringing in a whole bunch of green ones. Next year I will build a greenhouse. We haven't sold the house and the market has gone soft, so now we are going to wait until spring to sell. The only problem with doing that is I am torn between starting things indoors or waiting 'til we move. I know I could send my seedlings to ontario and they would survive the trip, but would it be worth it? This year I sent my sister a few tomatoe seedlings to Ontario and they all survived the trip so that's a possibility I guess. Maybe a little too soon to be thinking about that isn't it?
Congrats Ladyslipper! This was my first year from seeds and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I just made the mistake of starting too soon. But I had great results with those that I managed not to kill off. Stay tuned for when we start to share tips and ideas, there quite a few ladies and gents that have excellent tips.
I need to reseed the lawn soon, bought a small (1kg) bag of lawn seed for $10 (I though I was ripped off, but then again this is my first time buying lawn seed)

I don't have the room to pre-start seeds. Wish I did though. I usually just collect the seeds and throw back into the same area in the spring, then divide and move as needed.

I paid $7 on sale for a small bag Kenny, you didn't get ripped off.
I got the lawn fully mowed and weed wacked. not that the grass grew, it was just weeds.
Good to know! I just bought mine at walmart, they wanted to clear out all the garden stuff for chrismas displays
Since monday is thanksgiving for us up here, I'l going to dig maybe saturday, but I found out it was going to be 28*C then! I want to have everything done by next week, we're supposed to expect our first frost on the 5th

Tamara, it's only human nature lol you won't believe all the things that I 'meant' to do in the garden and didn't get to lol
this morning I raked up more leaves, and spread lawn seed (apparently something bit holes through the bag and I had a pile of seeds on the ground, oh well...I'll going to plant the mint I got (it's been sitting in the same baggie for about two weeks now and it still puts out new growth...tough! I spread some leaf bits over the tulip and daff bed and also around the arum bulbs that are putting out leaves. my muscarii are putting out leaves now like the arums (I freaked out about them cuz I though they were spring blooms, but found out this is normal) very weird temperatures this weekend so I don't expect to be doing much Today (saturday) 28* Sunday 17* Monday (Turkey day!!) 27* Tuesday 21* if I do end up digging it'll have to be tomorrow

As always I watered things--so so dry here-- BUT the rain DID green up our lawn---(It sure is getting hot again today)----- then about an hour ago my oldest DD & I dug up the bush my neighbor gave to her. She is all happy as she had one like it and now she has 2--so her yard will look balanced. it may be a barberry bush but I am not sure---she knows but I will have to ask to be sure---

A little birdie told me(my niece ) that at the grocery store where she works they are going to put all the bulbs on clearance this Friday for $2 a box. I'll be there for when the store opens.

I see that apparently I cannot type (or perhpas it is that I cannot spell)--at any rate the bush is a Bayberry bush---"sorry"

Raining here as well. I did get manure and fertilizer spread in my veggie plot. Just never worked it in yet...I am hoping to pick up a 'garden claw' thingy this week end.

Today I am going to go buy dirt to make a raised flower bed.--It will be this weekends project--I talked about it before before--it will go on each side of my bird feeder. I am thinking I will make half of it this fall & the rest of it next year.
OH--did I mention my Blackberry plants came?? I will have to plant them as well (will likley do that today)
________
Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
it is even "funnier" to have to buy it !!! I am used to having enough dirt of my own, just like you are, huh?
I bought 3 triple crown plants from Stark Bros. They are thornless.
I had 6 to 12 plants of the black satin thornless at the farm.
I will post pics but there will be no trellis until next year--but after the trellis goes up I will add a Clemantis or 2 to the trellis as well (that was how I had it at the "farm")
________
Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
the thing about the dirt is, our dirt at the farm was top notch--this stuff here in town is so light & sandy (when it is dirt & not clay) that it makes me very unhappy. When we still owned the farm, we even dug out my first flower bed and went to the farm & brought dirt to refill the area-- took man many trips with many 5 gallon buckets.
About the blackberry plants-Yesterday DH saw that i had planted my 3 blackberry plants & said--only 3 plants??? so when he makes the trellis I will have him extnd it to make an "L" shape & get more plants in the spring.

Been busy with work and just plain tired. So it's a good thing that summer is over. All I am doing now is waiting for the toms to ripen. But I keep picking them off when they r ready or close to. This is very cool, because even tho we have had some not so nice weather most of the plants have survived under my Hoophouse so I don't have to pick all of them off and have them ripen indoors. There's no way I'd be able to eat them all at once if that was the case. I am already eating them every day as it is. Lots of salads and today an Old German will be going on my Hamburger. Yum! first time with that one as well. It is not yet quite ready but it had split on the plant and was starting to not look so good. I did a taste test and it is good to go tho.
Just like the not having to buy "dirt", it's great not to have to buy Tomatoes. I wouldn't usually buy as many as I am eating now but I save at least $10 a week on tomatoes that I would usually buy.
Nuria, you guys eat a lot of tomatoes like we do. We both eat them with everythiing and cook with them too.
It is odd to have to buy dirt, but we also buy water (because we are on a well and ours tastes funny), and the other day I bought air to put in my tire. It was .50 to get the air machine to come on at the gas station.
Nature is so amazing. We have not had 1 drop of rain since September 14th. Not one drop. If a bird has relieved themselves passing over it evaporated before it reached the ground. But my tomato plants keep on producing. 2 of them don't even look wilted. I quit watering in July because we're on a well. My pepper plant looks wilted but I got a pepper today and there are more little ones. The flowers I haven't watered have given up the ghost but these vegetables just keep on going.
Sounds like a good idea to me Tamara. I don't have a lot of room to start seeds early either, but I think I will do what you do throw them out and then move them. I just wish our growing season was longer up here.
today I collected cone flowerseeds and zinnia. Also harvested some carrots which am cooking right now for supper.Yesterday my daughter helped me get my swing apart to store for the winter. My husband is recouperating so am on my own getting ready for winter.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raised me up to be more than I can be.
Depends who you talk to ?????????????/ We love them. Long white things similiar to carrots but larger and fatter. Let them in till spring......Did peel cook till soft and fry in butter .Till crispy.
Hows the pond going? I like to listen to them.. My sister in Ohio had one on a flat surface......They put a pipe in the middle and the water ran down and it looked like a real thing...... She had all sorts of frog statues around it .......Everyone kept bringing them to her ..........She even has a frog with a bikini on .. Pink ha ha . She move back here to Pa. and still have the frog in a bikini in her flower bed here..No pond.
I'll try some if you tell me how to plant and how to cook when the time is right. Or you could come and cook for me. How far can you fly on that broom?
well, i got sick before i could expand the pond this year, but i got my little one cleaned out, and had a good time working on it. and i got to see all my fish 6 goldies and a pleco. all have made the summer fine, and must be lots of bugs for them, i haven't been able to feed them the whole 7 weeks and they grew some. only lost one this year, that's pretty good, although it was a nice multi color, bug-eyed fan tail. oh well, it wasn't as smart as the others.
Are you bringing the fish in for the winter? My sister hauled hers in her van from Ohio and they lived in the aquarium......About 15 years......Now they died and she bought more.......walmart. And these are getting huge.......i will take photos next time I am there to show you.
DId you know that the larger the container the fish are in, the bigger the fish will get.? Hers was almost a foot long......
She has them here in her kitchen.......Kids love it .
This picture is of the new flower bed Rod & I made this weekend around one of my bird feeders. It is 14' x 2'. I have no idea about the depth--perhpas 4 to 6 inches
here is the beginning of my blackberry patch. There are only 3 triple crown plants. In the spring Rod is going to make me a trellis for them. On the side of the Berries by the shed, I have left room for a Clemantis. On the oposite side of the berries I hope the trellis will extend out so as to form an "L" shaped trellis--(and more room for more berries!)
The ground back here is real low--so I had to make a raised bed for the berries--like we did for the veggie garden.-- The pavers are so that the DH would not have extra trimming to do.

I tore out 20 tomato plants. Its been 37 to 42 at night so now my yard is naked. Thats all I did tho. I left the hostas,cedium,hybiscus,...to much to do at once. Last year it took 3 GOOD days. so I still have 2 left love it tho. Its 70 something here and just a perfect day. dh
I dont take my tomatoes out till they are very done.. Do you burn them or what?
I do sometime.. Or put them somewhere in a pile..... I finished planting tulips and crocus and allium ......So hopin the bulbs are all done with.....none of the flower beds are dead yet ......So I let them die a slow death ..
Well it seems it might be time for my tomatoes to all come in. The Weatherman says tomorrow is the last nice day. I just picked a bunch and gave some to my neighbor. They are very happy to be receiving them. I planted some sweet million and some sunflowers for them in their little garden, but they never covered them when the frost hit, so those plants bit the dust. Tomorrow I will go out and pic all the ones I can and hope that I can enjoy them slowly.
Juniegirl, that looks great. Is that a brick patio where you but the berries? What are you going to plant around the feeders?
Sheri: Thank you so much. I am real pleased also. BTW it is wider than it looks--it is 2 feet wide. about the brick where the berries are--- those are 2 rows of 18" x 18" pavers--5 in each row. Then a row of 12 x 12" pavers--8 of them
I just put the pavers down so DH would not have extra trimming to do when he mows. I made it 4 feet wide so I would have room to get to the veggie garden and to pick berries as well.
about the flower bed around the feeder: around the feeder i have 2 varigated liriope then starting from the side closest to the shed-- I have 1 russian sage, then 1 Sea Holly then at the other end-- I have 3 anemone and finally I have an East Friesland Salvia on that end
it looks kinda empty now--but the plants are small plus I want to wait & add as I see plants that I really want to have (that is how the russian sage and the liriope got there)

My tomatoes are having a "rebirth" so to speak--I have lots & lots of green tomatoes--some of the purple cherokee are large too. But as not one of that variety lived yet this year to maturity--I may have to fry them up for me son in law (and ya never know--some may just accidently fall into my mouth as well.
barb: Thanks: BUT while the shed is ours---(12 x 20)--the nice fence is the neighbors--dh says no to a fence

yea-well a girl has to have some excuse--I promised the SIL that when he brought me green tomatoes I would fry them up just for him (& my DD of course) about the sage---I just like how it looks--plus the oldest DD had to have some & the thought kinda 'took"

ya know, Barb--I really cannot answer that---I just bought a pot of the sage saturday--(got it at Lowes for $1.00) but I have a plan--I intend to put out those cheap tomato cages around the flowers in the spring before they get too tall--then I will train them up inside the cages so they will not "bush" so much.--
sounds like it will work--gonna try anyway--
________

Know what ? I did that and the tomatoes got so heavy when it rained they tumbled over. If you use the tomato cages, You better stake them.. We plant that trick this time......
Oh, noo Barb--for my tomatoes I have some heavy duty home-made L-shaped cages. My DH made/welded them out of an old cattle gate for me. his own design even.
I buy the cheap tomatoe cages for the likes of my cherry tomatoe plant that i keep on the deck of my house and for the flowers. (right now I have one over the 3-in-1 butterfly bush I planted this week-end as well)
--one has to keep the DH from mowing down the tiny new bush by accident ya know--.
FYI: if you buy a 3-in-1 Butterfly bush you actually get 3 very small plants---I feel stupid for not realizing that before.

I get zillions of leaves on mine.
DUH__Barb i am slowwww i just got what you meant--and yes thank you--I WILL stake the cages if I use them on my flowers--i have some of those green plastic rods/stakes you can buy in garden stores.---I have no trees to speak of so I cannot get wooden steaks to use---

That's not fair. I bought a 5-in-1 apple tree. It has five different branches grafted on the same base. I'd send in a complaint to where you bought it from.

today I raked some pine needles and put them on my neighbors day lily bed we made her. It keeps down the weeds and where I bought the day lilies they had them on thiers so looked like a good idea. Also started some Autumn Joy sedum with cuttings. Not much but, it was good to get outside and do something
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raised me up to be more than I can be.
I just stick them in the ground and a new plant starts. learned that on another thread in here. I tried a few a couple weeks ago and they have already rooted. Easy way to get more sedum.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raised me up to be more than I can be.
I digged out (another :) ) piece of lawn and made a little rockgarden. I sowed so much rockery plants that wouldn't look good in an other part of the garden (cause i kind of like big plants...:D )
yesterday I potted up some of my annuals. I am going to try to keep the alive this winter--in the attempt to NOT spend the money on them again next spring.
below is the plants I potted up.
Spikes (Espigas)
Quilers Geranium
3 pots of Vinca Vine
Alternanthera--it is the red variety & different than the one I had last year I only potted one--I have 2.
Then I potted some hen & chicks that my friend gave to me, in exchange for the Jerusalem Cherry start I brought to her. I have extra left over---i guess I will put them out around the air conditioner?

I worked out in the veggie garden today. Got quite a bit accomplished. The weather was beautiful. Now that we had a frost that killed all the annuals and veggies I can pull it all up and get ready for next year...
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raised me up to be more than I can be.
Happy to say no frost here! And it's almost the send of october, our average first frost was oct. 5. I ended up planting two large planters of dutch iris and crocus (one of each) and planted two 6" pots with allium in one and with more dutch iris in another.
I planted an amaryllis but the leaves started to rot once they came out (and I only water lightly when I potted it 2 weeks ago and haven't watered since! I bought 15 paperwhite bulbs for $20 (which I thought was a bit expensive but oh well) I have four yet to be planted, and 11 planted. Four in soil and eight in glass dishes. I want to give them for Christmas to my teachers, since Christmas break is about a week before actual christmas, I'm hoping they'll be in bud when I give them and will bloom on Christmas day if not earlier. It said 4-6 weeks, I know I'm a bit 'anxious' it is the first time I've done these bulbs. I might go buy some more amaryllis later.
I'm collecting containers right now to wintersow so I'm eating a lot of pre cut fruits and salads for the plastic container lol I have an uncle who is a great gardener and he's going to give me some bulbs if I remember to call him later.

Hey Kenny I love all the work you've done. It sounds wonderful. I love the idea of you giving floral gifts to your teachers. I hope they bloom right on time for you.
Don't forget to call your uncle, I don't want you to miss out on more bulbs.
You almost make me wish I still drove around. I bet your garden is going to look great this spring. If I drove I'd come up and see it.
Great Idea the paper white for gifts. I must do that some year I got some more of my garden cleaned up for winter and boy those Morning Glories were pretty but they sure found their way around anything they could cling too raked a few leaves for my sister in law for her composting. Beautiful day here.

I haven't been in the garden for so long.at least a month................ I guess the growing season is at an end for me,not 'cause the weather. it's beautiful and warm here today.just no motivation to do it at the moment. hopefully the prospect of a good rose season will properly motivate me next year.
I went out an checked my Blue rose.. It is in bloom again.. Only it is purple.. Then I helped Jack unload a wagon of wood for winter......He was greatful. Does that qualify as garden??????? Then I picked off the dry clothes and came in an made supper to eat.
i wish i could burn but i live in the city. we do have a compost pile in the back so thats where all the yard waste goes. not food waste tho. just grass, twigs, & stuff.

I can relate to the MGs, but they provided quick colour for me! Especially growing in soil as bad as ours! I forgot to let the plants dry out and I just threw them into my compost bin, I didn't open the lid for about a week, and there were MGs sprouting all over the place...they supported each other by twining on each others stem...talk about team work lol had quite a time they will cling to just about anything...except the tresslises I set up and the trellis against the wall lol
