Folks tell me that the one your Internet server provides, catch all the incoming virus.........
Now what about web browsing?

barb, i run avast. it catches the things you find when you are web-browsing. not that i get much 'cause all i ever do is check my email and come here. but it checks anything i try to download. and it updates automatically, EVERY time i log on, and is FREE. i like it and haven't had one problem. BUT, don't try to run more than one antivirus (on your computer) at the time, because they can cancel each other out and give you big problems. but if you put one on your computer (like i have avast) and then use the one from your isp, you should be in good shape. i also use spybot to catch the programs that track your web-browsing, nobody's business but mine. but taht is one you have to actually "run" periodically. it is also free. and will update if you tell it too, at no cost.

I use Avasts AVG free version myself...it's good, really good. And it's free...can't be much better than that.

I tend to check the reputation of the site before downloading anything from it. I check using http://www.siteadvisor.com/analysis/

E.g. A good site: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/agardenersforum.com
A bad site : http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/gator.com

with the site open (either here, photobucket or whatever) click on bookmarks, the click bookmark this site, then put it in the bookmarks tool bar. then after you open firefox if you right click on it, select open in new tab, and you'll have it open when you need it. you can also make one of them your homepage if you want. in that respect firefox works like ie.

Hold ctrl and click on a link... It will leave the current page alone and open up a new tab containing the address grin

If I want to try a new setting/addon I always have a experiential & independent version of Firefox ready to use grin

I use a portable version of it for me to experiment on so if I botch up and ruin everything I like, it's very easy for me to remove... (I also use another one to surf on)

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

And for those who are wondering what portable apps are...
http://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_app

P.s. check for other nice freebies from that site...

P.p.s. You can have multiple copies of the same portable app installed, they all will have independent settings grin

Pleasure grin

*I recommend the below with the Firefox portable edition first*
If you really want to get advanced and experiment a bit then type in "about:config" without the brackets in your location bar and mess around with the settings there... grin

Hey I found out something new grin...

If you are scared a file you have just downloaded contains a virus or other malicious items. Upload it to these people and they will scan it and analyze it for free and warn you if the file is infected grin
