about my Hen & chicks--when my MIL moved into the assisted livng she gave me a "hen & chicks pot"-----the other day when my friend saw I only had 1 remaining plant in it, she gave me some replacements. As she gave me more thatn I need---- I am going to put the extra around my air-conditioner--esp now that you have told me i can do it--thanks

I have hens and chicks that are outside. In zone 5 too! I have one that is called cobweb that is quite small and has little cobwebby things on it. I will try to get a picture to post later. I have some large ones which I got from my grandmothers which are very old and spread and spread all over. I love my Hens and Chicks. :ding:
I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raised me up to be more than I can be.
I sure want to see them.. I have green ones and burgundy colored ones..Like them both....You do nothing to them and they grow.. Mine is in a spot which is mostly tiny rocks.
I will try to get some pictures tomorrow. I would love to share some of mine, but how would i get them to you? i do nothing to them and they are planted around rocks.

They are a funny thing......If they are like mine..........The little piece below the flower even an inch I think is all you need...... Show me first .........They have to be shipped dry......Like in newspaper, cause they rot in wet...

Hey--Bali: (is that right??) below is a view from the front of the tomato cages my DH made me-(welded)- from an old gate. there are 2--- together they form a sort of 3-sided rectangle
here is a view from the back.------ The steaks holding them in the garden are actually roof bolts from a coal mine. dad retired from a mine, DH worked in one several years & BIL still does.

you know--I was all excited to plant cherokee purple toms this year--I did not get to eat one--they go from green to rotten--in one feld swoop--not gonna plant any next year---it was a good thing i had others to eat--and thank goodness i had chery toms on the porch in a pot.

That cage should work.......I just showed it to Jack and he said tit should work. Thanks for sharing.. Now he can weld you a round trillis. Mine made that from steel bars.........My favorite.
To ship hen/c Crumble up newspaper and put them in the middle .. Put news paper on both sides. Or if you use a bubbler.....I would say just put in news paper and roll it over a few times.
thanks for telling me of how to ship hen & chicks--
these tomatoe cages are not new--DH made them for me when we were still on the farm--They work great--they are nice & heavey so the toms never weigh them down.---PLus I like it that he made them for me !!!
soemtime when they are "empty" I will show them to you again--- and I like these better--I can get to the complete plant & never have trouble with not being able to get to the inside---the first ones the DH made me were like the ones my father made --(round) --so when they wore out--my DH designed & made these--i love them---
a round trellis--hummmmmmmmmmm I am gonna have to design one---he will make me anything I want but I have to draw it for him first---

Here is a picture of some i planted in a strawberry pot 2 year ago. Hope they will grow and spread over the pot. The middle is bare as the chipmunks ate some this summer Have to put more in next spring and get a pinwheel to put in pot to discourage my chipmunks.
and here are some different type that my grandmother had.
Let me know if you want some Dodge and I will try shipping you some.

This morning & went out onto my wet, drippy yard and planted the last of my hens & chicks, pulled up my morning glory, and watered (yes) my new flowers & my blackberries.
when I pulled out the morning glory, low & behold there was my hypernicum--() it is only about 5 or 6 inches tall but there it was--i am so happy--I just hope it does not freeze out the rest of the way this winter- I really like its pretty yellow flowers & pink tinged leaves---I hope I can nurse it back to health--- (does anyone know---should I cover it like one would a rose??)

today I finished cleaning out the veggie garden. Then I mowed and mulched leaves and bagged them. Hubby supervised as he can't do anything so the clean up is up to me. He sure can supervise though
Up here i always cover my gardens with mulched leaves, but to early to do that yet so have them bagged and ready.
This is the latest I have been still working in my gardens I think

i went in the garden today first time since i cleaned out the pond. i have to go back in the garden, it was nice today. did a little (very little) weeding, and took pictures. also dumped out some of the accumulated water from some pots. had fun just walking around
I gathered some seeds today. We had ran last week and I continue to be amazed at my tomato plants. Through this drought they have continued to produce without being watered and now after this rain they are loaded.

I am glad I picked yesterday..........I think frost tonite..It is so cold I froze the fingers out there using my camcorder to record the flowers that are left. Why didnt I do that a month ago?
I froze my fingers ...... Staying inside and watching a camcorder movie of lil Haley and my husband. It was so cute.....Now she is doing things ..
I was watering my Liriope tht i have in my new flower bed-(1 on either side of the fird feeder ploe)- and I noticed that the birds had 'gone potty' on it quite a bit--so since it would be very difficult to move the bird feeder--I dug up the plants and moved them over about 15-16 inches away from the ploe--they should be safe now.
If I only knew what to plant directly under the bird feeder--i guess nothing, huh???

Fall is officially here in my part of Canada. My garden is cleaned up and so is my greenhouse, shut that down last week. I was sorry to see my pepper plants go but my heater had to run quite a bit to keep the heat up, so we cleaned it all up, ready for next year.
I still had a few green tomatoes left, waiting for them to turn then I'm making pizza sauce, last order for the year, everything else is done. It does feel good.
Kindness is a language the deaf can hear and the blind can see.
I got side tracked. The reason I came to this forum is because today I raked some leaves, millions left to go, pruned a few plants, threw a few in the compost pile and checked out the tomato plants. I was going to clean them up but ended up bringing in some tomatoes instead. I'm going to leave them as long as their producing. The beets I planted in pots are coming up fine. I put out some late squash too. The plants look good but no squash yet.
