Today when I came home from work I took Emmy out to Play for a while , then I made my rounds of the yard checking flowers, seed pods,, etc,, and began to notice feathers here and there on the south east side of the house,, as if the wind( it's been really windy here) had just thrown them about,, Not paying much attention,, I almost walked right onto ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, what ever happened ,,, Happened in this spot Here
In the last[ 2-3 weeks I have been seeing lots of Hawks and Eagles.. Not long ago I was in the back yard,, and Not far from me A Hawk was chasing a black bird, a Crow> ? magpie?? ? I'm Not sure what it was,, But the black bird barely 'skimmed' the top of the fence,, and the hawk came barreling down on it and Hit the fence, with a thud, which made me reallllly pay attention,, dannnng it couldn't have been more than 15 ft from me,, But it was in flight again in less than a second,, another time I saw a chase was when I was walking Emmy .A man was cleaning the inside of his car with a vacuum cleaner in his driveway and a Hawk was in pursuit of yet another Black Bird,, Neither of the black birds that were being pursued wasn't small Birds either! The hawk chased the bird into the mans garage made a U-turn and they both flew out and up,,, The man didn't even have a clue any of it went on,, I was Just across the street opposite his driveway and clearly saw it was a Hawk,.. Yesterday at work I saw two eagles soaring ,, Beautiful! Now I don't know what attacked the unknown Bird in my yard What's left of it anyway But what ever it was consumed almost all of it,,
IF you don't have a sensitive stomach click on the link,, it will take you to an album in my Photobucket to view the rest of the pictures,,'' I guess curiosity has gotten the best of me,, There isn't much left to ID the Bird with ,,,,,,,,, But Maybe just maybe (and I know It's a stretch,, ) one of you knowledgable Bird watchers out there would know what kind of Bird met it's fate today in my yard
Diane - I'm so sorry this is happening in your yard. I don't like to see this happen either, though I really cannot take the noise that crows and most blackbirds make. (I know that Cindy will not be happy with me because of that crow she had... sorry!)
I tried to get into your PB, but it says it's private?
OK THEN!!! Those pictures WERE pretty GRAPHIC!!! And just before I was about to go downstairs to have dinner... (I was going to use the tongue-sticky outy guy, but my graemlins are not all loading once again here!)

I gave a warning,,, Not for the weak

I would say that a Grackle was attacked by either a Cooper's or a Sharp-Shinned Hawk. And judging by the condition of the feathers, It occured at PRECISELY 4:32 and 39 seconds on a Thursday afternoon. The hawk was wearing a red sombrero and brown and white wing tip shoes. The hawk had exactly $119.23 in his pocket, my dear Dr. Watson.

Oh Good THorny I was hoping I would get your input!!! IT could have left me the 119.23$ for the trouble of cleaning up the mess!! I will look up those hawks to see IF they are the ones I've seen
Your are sooooo silly Thornius, Good job on the assessment of the situation,,

Cooper's and Sharp-Shinned Hawks are almost identical in appearance, Have the same habitat preferences (in suburbs or yards with bird feeders) and both can occur in the same area. I have a Cooper's that tries to attack customers at MY feeders from time to time, without success.
Judging by the uniform color of both the feathers and feet of the victim, it APPEARS to be a Grackle.
