Finally my husband got a picture of our cardinals. We watched a robin this morning chase two male cardinals away from our ornamental apple tree. Was surprised to see a robin this late as we got snow today
sorry its not a great picture my hubby took it not me

Good Job! You got BOTH sexes in one picture. We birders always like to do that. That way you can show the similarities and differences of both species in one picture.
Here in Tennessee, we have MORE Robins in Winter than we do in Summer. All the Northern Robins Leave the north in Winter and migrate into the Southeastern US. They change their habits at that time. They form up in flocks of thousands of Robins and head into deep forests, where they subsist on a diet of berries, ESPECIALLY hackberries. In spring, the Northern Robins head back north and then ALL robins break up into family pairs, abandoning the giant flocks. They then move into the suburbs, where they change over into a diet of Earthworms and raise their young. In spring they also like to supplement their diet with fruit, ESPECIALLY THE MULBERRIES FROM MY MULBERRY TREES!!!

EARTH FIRST! (we'll strip-mine the OTHER planets later.)
It is so exciting to see a cardinal. I always go " There he is".Glad you liked the picture and it is very rare we see them both together. I think the female is just as pretty in her own way.
The robin was after my ornamental apples, and in the spring it is just as Thorny said. They come into the yard and start checking for worms. It is fun to watch them take a few steps and then turn their head like they are listening for the worm and then down goes their beak into the ground. Are the really hearing the worm Thorny?
Yes we had snow today about an inch, not enough to plow thankgoodness
I do love all the info you have on birds Thorny keep them coming.

We talked about female Cardinals on Birder's World forum and many of us feel that the females may actually be prettier than the male. The males are just red and black......that's it. The females have a subtle blend of many pastel shades that make them much more interesting.
Yes, Robins can actually HEAR the earthworms. You have heard it said that the EARLY bird catches the worm. Hear is a picture I took about 5:00 PM one evening last spring, that shows that the birds that sleep-in can sometimes get lucky, too.

Did you take that photo with your daughters Canon?
Do you all take your thistle feeders down for winter???///We have no snow but no birds at it either.. since I seen the chickidees.
b
Dodge, I leave my thistle feeder up year round--although I use less feed in the summer months. In the late fall & winter I add my wild bird feeder. In April until sometime in October I put my hummingbird feeder up in place of my wild bird feeder.
last year I put up a oriole feeder but it got bugs in it so very bad--I may just de-flower several holes in one of my hummingbird feeders and use that for a oriole feeder instead this next spring---???

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
I tried Oriole feeder several different times and like you said they just got ucky with bugs. This summer though I actually got a pair at the feeder. Can't wait till next spring to get pictures of them if they come back. I'm not sure but I think they are a real shy bird. They stopped coming to the feeder like in early August. Wondering if they only come to my area to have babies then leave

I was trying to clean up my photo program and saw this picture my husband had taken this fall of the female cardinal. It was a long shot on grass and I didn't think it would be something to keep, but thought I should crop it before I deleted it. What a surprise I got. Had to share with you guys.

How I love the cardinal........YOu did good showing it off.. I am a huge fan of cardinals......I have one on my cook book cover ..It is fun to open the book and look.
Thanks Dodge, I am thinking about putting this picture in our fair we have in the fall next year. I would have to blow it up to 8x10. I should probably get it printed somewhere besides my home computer.

Thank you everyone. I'm glad you enjoyed the cardinals. I have this pair plus another male that visit us every morning and evening. They seem to like what I am feeding them this year. I too have morning doves and chick a dees and nuthatches on sunny days. Also an occasional woodpecker.
