Awwwwwwwwww you two are toooo sweet, and the best medicine that I needed tonight!!!
I think it looks more like the top one? Mine was on hold this past summer in a large pot because I was going to plant it in the "pond" garden, but we never got that dug out. I was going to take the tubers inside, but didn't get around to it until we had already had some very cold weather.
BUT... I did drag the entire pot into the garage in hopes that it would warm up a tiny bit (no heat out there), and the next sunny day, I'm hoping to be able to get some of the soil away from the tubers to see if they are still viable.
Mine grew so well, but this year it didn't bloom until it was almost frost time?
Here it is in 2006
And here it is on October 1 of this year - very late to bloom for here!
I'll be so upset if it doesn't make it. I would definitely love some more if it doesn't, Jimmy , but I'll be so sad if this beauty is done.
I'll let you know in a few days how things look...
YEA!!! Don just took the solid MASS of roots and soil out of the pot and put it upside down in a recycling bin for me, and brought it into the basement! The soil does appear to be thawed out, and when I get a chance, I'll be able to cut away at the root mass and dig out the soil and see if the tubers survived - in the HEATED basement!
I also have to remember to pick up some peat somewhere tomorrow, in case they are ok. I'll need to pack them in the peat in a sealed box for the winter - keep your fingers crossed for me, K?
I put the tennis ball on there for scale - the mass takes up the entire bin. It's actually higher than it looks in the picture for some reason.
OK let me know when you know something. Also when would be best time to send you more if yours don't make it? Don't want then to freeze in the mail ether.

OK - Last Thursday morning I spent a solid 2 hours without getting up once, digging the soil out from all the roots in the solid mass around the tubers. I couldn't believe how much soil was left over! It filled a bonus sized kitty litter pail (40 lbs.!), and half the recycling bin the mass was in!!!
Here are most of the roots that I pulled off, before I took it over to the sink and washed the rest of the soil off and clipped the remaining roots!
And here are the tubers drying on a towel, with tennis ball for scale again.
They are now all packed away in peat moss for the winter and stored in the closet in the laundry room. I think they looked ok and not frozen - time will tell...
YEA!!! At least a couple of tubers made it through the winter - can you see the seven little tips starting to grow??? I'm soooooo happy that they didn't perish because I brought them in very late last fall. Now to keep my fingers crossed that they start to green up since I potted them up today and put them in a warm, western facing window.
I got some seeds in a swap, I think from njoynit, and after seeing yours, LYnne and Jimmy, and after you so nicely chronicled the storage for me lynne, I'm going to give them a try! Thanks and I'll let you know what I get!
Good luck with the seeds, mel! I wasn't able to grow any from seeds unfortunately.
Yes Sheri - I have to dig them up and store them over winter, but this color is soooo pretty I don't mind. I was just very late in doing it this past fall.
I just HAD to share my excitement with you all here, and to thank Jimmy again for his generousity! This is the orange canna this morning, still growing indoors for now but will probably go outside after next week.
I'm thrilled that it made it through another winter! See the little bit of the other pot next to this one? More of the same!
Wonderful, Lynne, just wonderful! And I totally agree with Diane's comment: it does just make a heart smile.
Merme
We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart? The other heart was given to another for us to find.
Yes Carol - we need to overwinter the tubers inside here in zone 6. I dig them up, clean them off, and cut off all the roots and let them dry out before putting them in peat moss in sealed boxes. Then I store them in a closet in my basement until about mid-March. I then pot them up to start indoors so they get a head start.
The only ones that I grow that need that care are the cannas and elephant ears. All my other bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils, and lilies can stay in the ground over winter. It's really not that much work once you get started... it's getting motivated to do it that gets me most years.

Isn't that the truth---it is that way with all things---for me anyway--it is not ever the work--it is getting me started that is the problem--I seem to love to procrastinate......My Bad.....

Now if I could only keep the Japanese Beetles off of it - look at all the damage they've done - I've already cut off edges of other leaves that were mostly destroyed!
Lynne try Beneficial nematodes will help to control them. You should be able to find them in Organic Garden stores. Also I use Joy with water works real well for my aphids and spider mites. Hope this works for you.

I try to take one day at a time -- but sometimes several days attack me at once. -Jennifer Unlimited- Yard Update -April 2012
Lynne I am glad it came back and finally bloomed for you. Mine have stopped blooming maybe because of the heat 102 today 105 predicted for Sunday. They were pretty while they lasted. Wish you continued good luck and many more blooms with yours.

Well I just can't stop taking pictures of this terrific plant! It's now over 6 feet tall and putting up more flower stalks - so far there are 3 that are blooming. In front of the canna is one of the brugmansias that Diane sent me last winter. Isn't it wonderful how we can grow flowering plants from friends that we have met here on TGH, from all over the country? Just so happens that both these plants are from Texas! Way to go Texas growers!!!
My neighbors on the canna side of the pond came over today - husband and wife - to ask me "what IS that very tall beautiful flower you have growing???" They can see it from their deck and couldn't imagine what plant was so tall here!
Don is standing next to Jimmy's cannas to show how tall it really is. He is about 5'10"! So this must be at least 7 feet tall!!! And it keeps on flowering! Gotta love it - thanks again, Jimmy!
See Diane's brug in front? They certainly grow big from Texas!
