This is sooooooo exciting! I've only seen them in my yard once before, several years ago, and in the same exact location - pecking on a decayed piece of tree trunk down by the rock wall.

I was on the phone with my mom just now and looked out the kitchen window, and saw this guy happily chopping away at what's now left of the trunk. A REAl Woody Woodpecker - toooooo exciting! clap thumbup bop

(sorry the picture is so bad, but it's the best zoom I could get from my deck, without chasing him away! He's gone now, or I would have tried to creep up closer to him...)

here's a great site for info and better pictures of them:
Pileated Woodpeckers

We have a pair in my mom's back yard...
They fly fast and love to eat carpentar ants...

They have a big ole nest in a realllly old tree out back...

We've never gotten a picture..

*the one almost flew in to my head one day...
I was in the back, daydreamin' I guess... just standin' still, and he came divin' in and flew right over my jead..
and landed on a tree next to the house..*

And another funny thing happened a few days after that..
a neighbor stopped and said I had one of those in my back yard, and I'm like, "YEAHHHHHH, I KNOW!!!"
COOOOOOL BEANS!!

We have Pileated all around us but none ever come within eyesight or earshot range of my yard; although, Heaven knows I look for one to visit my yard all the time.

I think what draws them to certain places is
BUGS, Ants mostly...
I know this area has ton's of them..
so, that may be why they're here..
