And here he is! That most famous of ALL the Wintertime Woodpeckers (and well known cowboy insult), the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. These are the birds that drill the neat rows of holes, space 1 inch (2.5cm, in concentric rings, all around tree trunks in the U.S. and Canada and then return in a few days to feed on the sap and also the insects that become trapped in it. This little fellow wasn't drilling today. He was just scouring the trunk of my
willow tree for any free-crawling insects.
