What is the best thing to use as mulch for roses? Or, what are the merits of various possible mulches for roses? Thanks.

Your local garden center should give the best advice. Generally, pine or shredded cedar bark works well for roses. It's for moisture retention, right?
Check out this link Watering And Mulching. It says the same thing.
