weren't you a vet assistant?

My dog, Porter, has a wound on his from leg right at the top joint. I have no idea how this happened since he's never out alone. I noticed it this morning because of the dried blood on his fur. It's painful. It looks like the skin has been rolled back in a circular area and it's deep. Our vet is closed today and the only emergency vet is the one that cut off ToDeTa's leg so I want to wait until tomorrow. I gave him 2 Biaxin. Is there anything else I can do? He doesn't act like it's bothering him except when I try to touch it. I'm not sure if he's limping, I think he is, but it might be just because I know he's hurt. I didn't notice he was limping until after I noticed the wound.

Can you pour some peroxide on it, Sheri? It sounds like a 'hot spot'. Those are often fungal. It will probably be OK until your vet is open for business again. Peroxide might help clean it up a bit for you.

My kitty had that problem once. He liked to go outside but didn't have any claws. I guess he had got in a fight because he came home with a gaping round wound about 2 inches wide. There was nothing a vet could have even stitched together. I had a couple of containers of saline Mommy had given me. You may be able to buy the saline at a drug store. I'm not sure where she had gotten it. I poured that over the wound to keep it clean and then put neosporin on it once it had a little more than just raw to it. It worked. It healed up nice. It did take a while, though. It is obviously very painful for them. I know it makes you feel terrible for him that he is hurting so bad.

Porter has had hot spots before and this looks different. I'd take a picture if he'd be still. It sort of looks like a puncture wound but I can't figure out what punctured him. I do have peroxide and will clean it when Johnny gets home to help. Porter is so big I can keep him still by myself.

sheri, you can also give him a baby aspirin for pain. but it has to be real baby aspirin. all others are toxic.

i've had to do that before.

Johnny said it is a hot spot and now he's running around like it doesn't bother him at all. I'm going to give him some more biaxin tomorrow and take him to the vet. Thanks everyone.
