Hi all :) I purchased some cactus seeds today. The package says to use 1/2 sand and 1/2 leaf mold. Would it be OK for me to use 1/2 sand and 1/2 cactus potting soil? Is the cactus soild just for adult cacti or for growing from seed? TIA

There are three cacti next to my garden. My dad cuts out young growth & uses it to make Mexican dishes.
Waiting for fall...

I did and will show you the results. took about 15 years to go to one tall speciman.. I bought the seeds at the store and they grew so well I was giving them away. Will show later. Have to take it an upload.

CACTUS I GREW IN ZONE 5 FROM SEEDS. IN WARMER AREAS IT SHOULD BE LOTS EASIER.. THIS TOOK ABOUT 15 YEARS TO THIS SIZE . I GAVE MANY AWAY. IT AMUSES ME.. USE SANDY SOIL. THIS IS MY seed STARTING CEMETARY......MY FAMILY LAUGHS AT MY JOB HERE. IT IS A GARBAGE TOP (LID) WITH A CABLE ON WIRE, SAND AND SOIL. WORKS WONDERS IN MARCH. DID YOU NOTICE how colorful I am today?

I can get more cacti by cutting out a pad and burying it in the soil. That's how my dad and I started up our cactiThe fruits taste delicious too.The pads are edible. My cacti are Indian Fig cactus-look it up in the Sunset Western Garden Book.

cactus seed needs moisture and heat to germinate and they can take a while to get going. if you have a heat mat, that will help - it's not necessary though. temp should be at least 70 for at least 12 hours a day.
they also need light. indirect light - so that means near a window and some kind of light covering over the container to keep the direct sunlight out - layers of cheesecloth or some sheer curtains folded over a few times.
seedlings need to be kept out of direct light for the first year - so that light covering will be in use for a while.
i just got some cacti seeds myself. first time for me with them and i'm not too experienced with any kind of seeds to begin with, so i hope at least a few germinate...
oh, a mix of regular potting soil/sand is fine to use. very lightly cover the seed with a bit of the mix. barely cover.
