I planted a Gala apple seedr from the apple I was eating.. Last spring.. The tree is almost 3 feet tall now ..Outside.. Wont be true but will be fun to watch......
Your not too far north.. Those grow better there than they do in Penna.
Oh sweet!! I love Gala apples.. and peaches!! What did you mean your apple tree won't be true? It won't produce apples?? Why not?? What other fruit trees could I consider?? Where is a good resource.. to buy them from?? How exciting!! Yay!
Hmm.. so it wouldn't be the same kind of Gala apple? Is that because you planted it from a seed? If I buy a Gala apple tree, will I get apples like the ones I buy now?? This is very confusing..
I am near Cambridge.. in Guernsey county. And I am not sure if I have a nursery near here that deals in trees or not.. I suppose I should do some checking.. when is the best time to buy/plant fruit trees??
Gala Apples, Peaches.. is there anything else that would do well here?
I think all my catalogs subscriptions ran out.. unless they just haven't sent them yet.. is it too early?? Maybe I should hit some websites and request new ones..
Hmm.. I probably wouldn't order fruit trees thru the mail either.. IF I can help it at all. I will just have to see what is available locally.. or close anyway. lol I know of one place that I have never been to.. I don't know if they offer fruit trees or not.. and even if they do, they may not have what I am looking for.. I may HAVE to do the mail order thing I guess after considering what I have around here to work with.
If you want some Gala apple trees from seeds, get seeds of two different varieties; one as a rootstock & one as a scion. Grow both seedlings & get a bud from the scion & graft it onto the rootstock. Hopefully, the bud will grow. After a couple years of training, you'll have a Gala apple tree.Good growing!!
I live about a quarter mile from the city limits of Merced. I have enough firewood to last a year. I can stay warm since I'm overweight, my boby will use up fat to keep me warm.I better lose some weight.
LOL @ Dodge.. I need firewood!! That is our sole source of heat!!
I have been looking at Gala apple trees on a couple different sites and it says to pollinate with a Golden Delicious.. I don't really WANT a Golden Delicious.. =( Is that my only option.
I haven't researched the Peach trees yet.. I figure I need to get a good grasp on the Apple trees first.. and I came up with the idea to do Blackberry bushes too.. hehe.. but that is a different thread!
good i hope they grow! mine havent done anything yet but i forgot to soak them (the type of iris) lol... oh your suposed to put them in the frerezer i have them in the regular fridege part oooppss lol
pleaseee... Betty Crocker aint got nothing on me =)
yea i now enrique! and it didn't look that well either! i don't thing it was a miniature its about 5'0 so maybe a dwarf... but yea its a rip off when u get get a lil fruit tree plant thats growing at homde depot i think for 4 bucks... no i do not have any fruit trees pinkhorse, i used to when i was little we used to have 1 orange tree it had the best oragnes the tree mustve been really old becuas eit was huge but our neighbor made us cut it down saying the leaves got in their yard but instead of making a scene we cut it down but it reprouted haha! then we had 2 grapefruit treess.... at my gmas house now though she has 2 grapefruit trees 3 oragnce trees one loquat tree and a lemon tree... she used to have though at her old house 14 orange trees and 5 grape fruit trees and 2 lemon trees and 1 lime tree. lol but her yard isnt as big now... and i would buy fruit trees for 4 bucks but their not dwarf and we rent so im not going to put a big growing tree like that in a yard thats not mine and it would be hard to dig up...
pleaseee... Betty Crocker aint got nothing on me =)
I have 3 peach trees in my yard......from my dads trees across the street...he's always finding new peach trees growing around the yard and I've been taking them off his hands....the tallest is only about 4 foot though so they have a few more years to grow yet. Testy trees, dad has had several totally die from frosts hitting them in the spring.
I just saw a doughnut peach tree in the Park seed catalog.. anyone know much about it?? It says it is entirely self fertile.. so I wouldn't have to mess with different varieties.. I know nothing about peach trees.. as far as what is a good kind to get.. anyone have any suggestions as far as varieties that are better than others?? Thanks!
Pinkhorse, look for a few more nursery listings online for Gala apples and see what they say about pollinators. It may be that they consider Golden Delicious the best pollinator, but there are probably others almost as good. ALL peaches are self-fertile, so go with what sounds good to you. Elberta is probably the most popular, and I can say that it's fantastic. Red Haven is excellent. I've seen both of these at Lowe's and Wal-Mart in past years. Buy them before they begin to blossom or leaf out for best transplanting. Dwarf fruit trees are more productive for their size, and tend to fruit within a year or 2 from planting. Semi-dwarf are preferred over standard.
Ok, thanks Dave!! I will probably go with the Elberta Peaches if I can find them.. you said you have seen them at Wal-Mart and Lowe's.. that is good, cause I have both locally.
When is a good time to get them?? I don't want to wait until they are all picked over.. but it is snowing tons here right now.. so not a good time to plant.
Pinkhourse; we got our fruit trees from Stark bros--I tell you this because that is the only place I have ever found the lodi apple that I loved so much. and I have seen other 'lodi' apples for sale in the area and i was so happy to see them, but when I got them home they were not the apple I had grown.--so I am guessing tht starks was/is a bit different. but from them, it was a wonderful apple.
1)we had an Elberta queen peach out at the farm--- 2)and we also had a Reliance peach ---(my peach trees didn't do so very well--it is too cold here for them I guess.--but the Elberta queen made a wonderful pie as well. 3) a Jon-a-red apple--it made very good pies. 4) a Lodi --it made the very best applesauce, but don't wait for the apples to turn 'yellow' --when they are that ripe they are not even good eating apples.
we had 2 pear trees too but I cannot find the papers for them, so sorry I cannot help you there.

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
Try a variety called Relience Peach. Its a cold hardy peach that will grow in your area. Actually many peaches (and other fruits) will grow in zone 5. I am in zone 5 and grow kinds of peaches, and 2 nectarines- they are doing fine, and growing well. I grow a bunch of apples, and pears as well. Look at a USDA growingzone chart to see what area you fall under, and go from there.
growing fruits from seeds will not bear a true type of fruit that it is. A gala apple is a cross between, a Kids Orange and a Golden delicous. The tree more than likely would be one of those, not the cross. Also fruits like apples, pears, and peaches etc, are very slow to bear fruit growing that way- thats why most fruit trees you buy are grafted. Grafting ensures it will be a true variety, and controls the trees size (dwarf, semi Dwarf, standard etc). Grafting is done by joining a Scion Branch to a rootstock, often another type of fruit (quince is often used for pears etc).
Well I am kind of on hold as far as buying fruit trees right now anyway. My husband is off work indefinitely and has to have surgery so we are really in a bind financially.
My family is also in financial trouble. The cost of living is rising quickly and my dad only earns around 9.50 per hour and has to take care of a family of seven and now that I'll soon be old enough to get a job, maybe we'll get out of debt.
By the way, have you ever thought of growing nectarines? They're fuzzless peaches.
Nectarines taste similar to peaches but the major disadvantage is that they are subject to the same diseases such as peach leaf curl. With oil at 120 bucks per barrel and rising I don't think things will improve at least for a couple of years.
Nectarines, and peaches are very much the same- Just nectarines do not have the fuzzy skin. Its believed that Nectarines are a "sport of peaches" meaning a mutation that sometimes occurs. They are grown the same, and look identical, other than the skins differ. You prune them the exact same way as peaches!
