Today is the FIRST day of the Great Backyard Bird Count. I walked through my neighborhood for 2 hours this morning and counted 18 species. I got as many pictures as I could. The best bird of the day was a mated pair of Eastern bluebirds. The male posed on the branch of a tree singing merrily for 10 minutes. He was 10 feet away from me and I was able to get about 80 pictures of him. He saw me the whole time but did not seem concerned, only curious. bluebirds are usually VERY skittish of humans, but he seemed almost GLAD to see me.

C'mon Thorny, what were the 18 species?? I wish I had 2 hours to do that, but I have to get ready for a dinner party I'm having Monday night.

Thanks Thorn Eastern bluebird was watching you ..... Now I can go read of him in my book.. What do you do, writer them down as you walk around? I would never remember them.. I am reading of the migration patterns..

I used to write them down, but NOW I find I am able to remember them fairly well. And he was watching me very intently, not out of fear, but out of extreme curiosity and interest.

There used to be tons of House Sparrows when I lived on a farm down in Franklin County, but never here. I can't say I miss them. I've only seen a Mockingbird here once in 13 1/2 years. I haven't noticed any Grackles yet this year, but I'm sure I will.

It's over Dodge. Monday was the last day. I got 18 species and about 200 pictures. Journey North, a bird tracking site contacted me about my American Robin Sightings. They were VERY interested in my sightings and in the type of songs they were singing.

You must be good at the job......The birds disappear here when it snows.
They like sunny and warm..Probably in the christmas trees.
Do you give that report yearly to them?

What type of song were the robins singing? wonder whey they're so interested in robins? You have a warm climate like I do, don't you? We have robins all the time.

ive seen alot of birds today ive seen finches, crows, woodepeckers, i think a eagle?? i dont know if they ar ein florida though it might of been something else, i saw voltures, some grey and blue type bird, a pigeon... no pictures though...

But...BUT....! Crows are my totemic birds. Rabbits and raccoons are my totemic mammals. (And anyway the "Crow" on my badge is ACTUALLY a Raven......a Norwegian Raven, I believe. That painting was done by a Scandinavian.)
