2 tsp yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup butter or shortening
1 egg
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp salt
3-4 cups flour
1/2 cup mixed fruit(raisins, currants, candied fruit~I only use currants-your choice)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp allspice
1/8 tsp nutmeg
Egg wash: 1 egg yolk and 1 tbsp water, mix and set aside.
Icing mix: 1/2 cup icing sugar. 1 tbsp milk and 1/4 tsp vanilla, mix and set aside.
Scald 1/2 cup milk in pot, add butter to melt, sugar and salt then cool while yeast is resting.
Sprinkle yeast over warm water, set 5 minutes and stir and rest another 5 minutes.
Stir both mixes together, beat in an egg.
Mix 1 and 1/2 cups of your flour with spices and fruit. then add the dry to the wet mix and slowly add in more of your flour a handful at a time.
Knead 6 to 8 minutes, grease dough and let rise an hour. Punch down, divide in 16 balls. Place in pan and let rise again for about 30-40 minutes. Brush with egg and milk mixture. Bake 375* for 15-20 minutes.
When cooled , ice a cross pattern over each one.
