Well, maybe not quite spring, but I've got seedlings started, and a few things planted in the garden. Isn't anyone excited enough to post what they're doing?

weve been posting all over i think... i have so many things growing i lost track! lol... and im not the type to memorize names i just be like over there is a purple flowered thingy isnt it pretttyyy....

Hey peppereater,same here.I got zukes up and growing & peas as well in my garden.The tomato seeds I planted a week or two ago are sprouting.I've got tomatillo & watermelon seedlings on the way.

well, i have started 216 pepper seeds, kind of downsizing from last year. the guy i start them for wanted less to do this year, his last harvest was a 55 gal barrel of hot peppers, that's alot, and i have 2 shelves of the freezer just packed tight still, we ate a whole shelf-full this winter, and will just about do the rest in by harvest....yummmm.

yep it is spring-or just about---not much planting for me---I will start out container planting some spinach & some green onions.---but I will believe spring is here when I see it--and it will have to be for more than 2 days !!! :wink:

We can't plant here until the third week of June so mot much done yet...

The second week of May for us here, but you never know. I believe I read somewhere that global warming might change our zones

Hope it changes it for us here a little. We had frost on July 5th here last year.

We don't plant much here before the first week on may either---well we do but in greenhouses--or very close to the house perhaps

Do you start them from seeds for him. I'll bet that's time consuming to transplant.

I'm going to plant regular bell peppers this year - just 2 or 3 plants maybe 4. Just for eating and to give to a friend.

I planted my strawberries over the weekend and I've got lettuce and radishes to put out. It was too wet (I'm happy to say) in the place for them over the weekend. We've tillered up the other garden spot. I know some people say don't tiller but I don't know how to get rid of the weeds and stuff that appear without tillering. It's too much to try and hoe it all out.

when we first moved to oklahoma, we rented a big tiller to open a couple gardens in the back yard of our rent house. we didn't know anything about bermuda grass at that time, and sure didn't know that tilling it was comparable to throwing gasoline into a fire. what a mess., but i digress, this is about that tiller.
it was an awesome machine, it had forward and reverse and high and low gears and it smoked and popped and ran like a bulldozer through that lawn. finally, satisfied with the fine mincing of the grass roots and stems dear hubby begins to load it back up the ramps into the pick up, but decides to back it in so he can tie the handles off for transport. well, something goes seriously wrong, and i hear him shouting from the front yard aghhhhh aghhhhhhh. i go running up there to see him pinned against the cab between the handles and this monster tiller has caught its wheels and is beginning to climb the bed after him, somehow he has engaged the tines, trying to turn the durn thing off and he's shouting turn it off, turn it off. turn it off. i have arrived with the shovel in my hands and i reach in and stick it on top of the spark plug like i have seen him do to "kill" an engine fast. and silence. he's drenched in sweat, and i need to go change pants cuz i was laughing sooooo hard, wellll... we have never had such a spring since.

spring keeps teasing us here, a nice day here----two weeks of cold---then another unseasonably warm day, then another week of cold, and so on.

I want it to get here ALL the way! I'm ready.....so ready.

Oh man Petunia! That must have been scary!! I'm sure all of you can laugh about it now though.

I am beyond ready for spring! It is going to be 45 here the next few days though! That is the nicest it has been since November! It feels really good to us here! I am ready for 60s and 70s though!

Oh my Patunia. My tiller is little and now I know why I'm glad about that.

mine too sheri but I fear chopping up my foot every time I'm trying to start it but I love the littel thing

I have a bitsy tiller---but then I only have about a 10 x 8 raised veggie garden.

back in the day at the farm dad would bring his monster of a tiller over & do my garden for me in the spring & then once in awhile in the fall. When we moved here he gave me his little one that he did 'touch ups' with.

DH does the tilling for me now--takes him about 15 minutes & that is if he does an extra good job.

but then half of what I have in garden does not get tilled--1/4th has my herbs & 1/4th has my asparagus (yes!!)

I do not plant potatoes any more so I decided I did not need such a big garden.

(BTW: I sure hope my new blackberry plants survived the winter, guess I should really go out & check, huh???---)

I have to keep my mind on my tilling or I'd get overwhelmed in my yard

Just bought some cantaloupe,snap bean,& cuke seeds today.Feels more like mid spring here.

I've planted potatoes a couple of times but we just don't eat enough of them so I'm not planting them this year.

Thats what I say---with just the 2 of us here---planting potatoes is not worth the work to me---now when the kids were home, sure, I planted enough that I did not have to buy potatoes until January or February-

now I just plant 1 or 2 hills so I can have some good small new potatoes.

I read one time that a person with little space should get some old tires, plant a hill in one tire on the ground--when the plant comes thru the dirt & is up a few inches, you put the next tire on top and fill in the dirt---the potato plant will continue to grow thru this dirt toward the sun---when it is so high you again put another tire---and so on---I do not think there was any limit to the # of tires one could use---

at harvest you just remove 1 tire at a time & harvest the potatoes from that tires layer of dirt.

I have never tested this theory as I was afraid of the possibility of spiders (the real ones)--although it sure sounds interesting, don't you all think??

I think that sounds very interesting Carol! What a good idea. I wonder if anyone here has tried it.

just 2 of us here too and I go through 20 pound bag of potatoes a week

that is what I would like to know---i am thinking wouldn't you have to have some really rich soil or at least fertilize well??

If I had a mind I might be able to remember where i heard or read that, 7 then I would have someplace to begin seeing if that actually would work--

I think I would rather use home made frames of some kind instead of tires, ya know??

my dirt is not good enough to grow them I just buy a bag every week

I know I support the dairy farmers too, to the tune of about 6 gallon a week in chocolate and 1 gallon of white, and sometimes a butter milk

I tell you I do not know what we are gonna do about the price of things---I aaaam hoping it will not get much crazier.

I've read somewhere about planting in tires. I thought it was someone on here.

Suzy, you guys eat a lot. With 2 of us at home I never even cook. Johnny eats breakfast and lunch out while working and then we eat a sandwich at night.

sheri, potatoes is about all we do eat. Ashley has them fried, I eat them mashed, baked and boiled with cheese melted on them, love that I usually add cabbage and broccoli to the pot and cheese over all of it. then when hubby comes in I do a full meal 3 times and we eat out once

What if milk reaches seven dollars a gallon???What if potatoes reach five dollars per 10 lb.bag??

Suzy, so there's actually 3 of you. When my girls were home I cooked every day breakfast, lunch and dinner. We ate a lot of potatoes then too.

What do you do with the cabbage? Add them to the potatoes?

Maybe I saw it somewhere else because someone posted pictures. It worked great.

I never buy bags of potatoes--well rarely.... I either buy frozen fries, or boxed scalloped potatoes.....Mark doesn't care for mashed potatoes. He likes baked potatoes but when we buy a bag they start growing because we just can't eat them fast enough.

Maybe every now and then we should just buy those single potatoes that are wrapped and pre scrubbed.

if one uses the tires, do you then have trouble with spiders & other such 'crawlie' things??

Milk is $7.15 a gallon and potatoes are $5.99 for 10 pounds here.

DH and I are seriously thinking about starting up a small potatoe farm next year...just for ourselves. We eat them everyday.
