Right now,I've got zuke seedlings in my garden.I expect to harvest zucchini by mid April. With enough heat & protection, you too can grow early squash, heck even super early melons&cukes!
The Zukes are full on here, after a cold and very wet June. Seems like the last few days of warm weather has made everyhing in the garden take off. This year I tried a round Zuke called 8 ball. They are fruiting now. They take a tad longer than the long zukes, but I figured its worth a try. The Regular Dark Green Zukes, are doing good too. Its amazing how fast those things grow- almost 2 fast to pick! The male flowers are good to eat- beat an egg dip the flower in the egg then bread with flour, and fry them- alomst better than the fruits!
Here is a pic of an 8 Ball Zuke I took in the garden.

i like to slice on the diagonal and stir fry. i recently had some dipped in flavored olive oil and grilled. they were sliced long diagonal so that each slice was about 4-5 inches long. it was sooooo yummy
Having grown zucchini a few years ago, we became very creative at cooking it too. We love to BBQ, and zucs on the barbie are wonderful!
Wash the zucchini & slice down the middle, lengthwise. Brush insides lightly w/ olive oil. Sprinkle insides w/ favorite seasonings. I used garlic, a little Italian seasonings, salt & pepper.
Grill zucs ~5 minutes on each side. Same thing can be done w/ yellow squash. Not this year for us though. Can't get the critters to stop eating the blossoms. Ugh!
I'm growing Peter Pan, Starship, and Sunburst Patty Pans (which aren't zucchini, but are a type of summer squash), Ronde de Nice (an heirloom round zucchini), Costata Romanesco (ribbed along the sides and looks like a flower when sliced), and Golden Zucchini. So far, we've gotten Peter Pan and Sunburst Patty Pans which are lovely grilled in sandwiches with portobello mushrooms, purple onion slices, and Rosa Bianca Eggplant (a Sicilian heirloom, lavender/white and round, creamy and delicate). I also harvested one Costata Romanesco so far, totally stoked about this as we've been wanting this variety for 3 years now and have had miserable luck growing them due to an over-population of earwigs which munch the seedlings early in the season. I had Duane till that bed deeply and heavily amend with compost in the spring. I started seeds indoors and transplanted fairly large seedlings, but then I also sprinkled diatomaceous earth quite liberally into that bed, scratching it in to a depth of about 4". We're starting to see more female flowers now and the pollinators are out in full force, so we should have a decent season. I plan to harvest 2 Ronde de Nice in the next few days. I like to let them get to about 5" across so I can stuff them.
Does anyone eat the blossoms? I don't know which ones to eat-male or female and would it matter? Are they battered and fried? Good in sandwiches raw or fried?

not I Zucchini person here.....dipped in milk then flour and fried in margarine. Yummy..... I made 4 zucchini cakes yesterday .. Also grated zuchini and onion and flour and egg, fried to golden......wow it was sooooooooooooooo good.
I picked off 6 more and delivered them to my sis in town.. Had to go get fish for friday and pick up my umbrella i her car.. And some jelly the sis in law made for us...
I peel it and puree it then freeze it in one cup bags. I throw it in everything that has a pasta sauce. Other than that I just use it in muffins and cake.
