This is the area where I planted my strawberries. This is before. I planted them then covered them with leaves because we still have some cold days coming up.

I think you could give 'em a few days and then expose just the leaves...cover 'em back when a hard freeze is expected. Once they're hardened off, they can take a frost. Not saying I'm an expert on strawberries, though.

probably not sheri. we always had them come back after loads of dirt was dumped on them. at home, they were at the end of the plowing row, and they still made it.

Sheri, I think it would be fine to just let the leaves lie. The strawberries will come up right through them. That's what I did with my strawberries the first year, and I used an even thicker layer of leaves than you did. Now, I cut off my ornamental grasses and use my shredder to chop it fine to make straw and use that to mulch the strawberries. The straw helps keep the strawberries off the ground and reduces rot.

that picture is before I planted them. After I planted them I covered them over with leaves. I think I'll put some straw too so the strawberries won't be on the ground.

Thanks for the info Jiffy. That's good to know.

That's 'cause they're not pumped full of inorganic fertilizres & harmful pesticides. I've grown strawberries before but them berries always stay small. Then again,I never pinch off the blooms the first year;I face too much pressure to produce fruit.Their leaves are also mottled with yellow;virus perhaps?

Don't plant your berries too deep, the crowns sit kind of level with the soil, not under it. You need good air circulation to keep any fungus away.

Oh and berries get smaller after 3 or 4 years, that's when you replant a new crop.

kapish. Everything I've read and heard from others says to pull off the first blooms. I don't want to do that.

Pinching the blooms gives stronger growth and a better root system for the following years. I agree half and half is just as good.

I have never grown strawberries before. Is it too early for northern Ohio to plant them?

I had a few blooms and with much sorrow I pinched them off. That's the saddest thing.

1stTime, I don't know about Ohio. Can you check online?

Don't plant til the danger of frost has passed.

Frost damages and kills tender strawberry plants.....Sorry Barb. I have to disagree with you.

I bought some of the Walmart shots the 10 per package ones. Only a few are coming through so far. I hope I won't be sorry. I planted them into pots in my greenhouse way too cold to plant them outside just yet.

I always buy those Rosepetal, so much cheaper. This time I planted Tri-star. I change the variety ever 4 to 5 years..
