Well, here we go again. We've had a whole month of warm weather and everything is greening out and growing nicely....and now we are expected to have 2 or 3 days of freezing temps early next week. Last year it completely devastated my garden....so many of my trees had leafed out, etc. I allow myself to get fooled every year!! We'll have weeks of warm temps and everyone has all their plants out for sale and I end up planting before I should. I just planted 10 six packs if marigolds Monday, as well as a ton of other annuals that I will have to dig right back up and bring indoors because covering them usually doesn't keep them from getting damaged or even killed. You'd think I would learn my lesson. Somebody just shoot me.

Alan: you were just anxious, we all do that at one time ot another.---I would just save what I could & go from there. it will eventually get to be spring--or summer---either way you will get to garden!!!

As for covering them, it depends on just how cold it gets. I've found that as long as it only gets down to about 30 covering will usually protect them well enough, but if it gets down into the mid to upper 20's (or worse) covering just doesn't do a good job. Looks like I may be digging up a bunch of plants Sunday and replanting them later. I will definitely be covering my smaller Japanese Maples, though.
My Dad always called it Dogwood Winter...it comes out of nowhere in the middle of April and then we're usually in the clear after that. However, it's been known to even snow in May here, but it's been a while since that has happened.
it has snown here in may but it is gona as soon as it happens. earlier this week, it was forcast that we have snow flurries this friday. I do so hope they are mistaken.

We're having pretty mild weather here now too, but it's almost a sure thing that we'll get snow or at least freezing weather yet. But the sunshine today sure makes me anxious too. We have to keep reminding ourselves...not yet...not yet.

Tell me about it. I really wanted to cry when I heard Matt Heinken on the radio this morning with the forcast. All my creeping flox are blooming profusly and my elephant ears are unfurling leaves even as I type. I will be covering everything this weekend and keeping my fingers crossed. I put my sons to work in the backyard today turning ground for new beds, had planned on planting the seedlings I started weeks ago tommorow, but I guess I will be waiting on that......
I'm starting my greenhouse up today, hoping and praying it won't get too cold for that. I do have a heating system, but if it gets too cold it will dip lower then it should.
