I have searched & I cannot find my paperwork on my Hydrangea. It is supposed to be a "Nikko Blue". that is what the tags on it, said.

I was of the impression that it grew from old wood, and i should not prune it back.

well the bush is beginning to come back this spring---from the base--and the previous years wood appears to be dead. This happened the year before last too--I thought then, it was the bad winter, and that I might not of had it protected well enough, but now I am begining to wonder.

I guess the nursery could have marked it wrong ?????

I was wondering how long I let it go before I know weather or not there will be growth to last years wood, and then how do I proceed in the future???

mine is five years old this year and it's only the second time the existing stalks put out new growth. the other years it grew from the base.

i guess it takes a bit for them to get established.

the one that i transplanted from the neighbors yard a couple of years ago (was very well-established in it's prior location) has also gone back/forth with it's growth pattern.

as long as it's growing, i wouldn't worry!!

I have 7 hydrangeas.....3 are older, 2 are teenagers, and 2 are babies.... haha

My 2 babies look just like yours Carol.....last year I just left the wood and it just pulled right out after a while because it was dead. I don't think leaving it will hurt anything, not since it's coming up at the base. I'd just leave it for a while to make sure. thumbup

they are right. sometimes even the ones that supposedly grow on old wood will bust out from the base instead.

i used to just leave mine until the old wood fell out then cleared it away like fallen leaves.

Thanks for all your help, Joclyn, Loz and Jiffy.

I will leave my Hydrangea as is---and golly it sure is growng fast.--(goody goody). when the old wood falls away, then I will get rid of it.--for now I will 'let it be'.
