This came off a big shrub out by the fence, in mostly shade, with horrible thorns.

Could be quince. Does it flower? Pale pink or white? Could be flowering quince or fruiting quince. The hummingbirds love quince.

Mel, I've got some Quince but it doesn't have thorns. Is there a type of Quince that does have thorns or maybe what I have that's labeled as Quince is labeled wrong. I don't know if it flowers. I'll keep an eye out. I've just never seen such long sharp thornes.

When I lived in Port Orchard I had quince and it had really long thorns. And it blooms early in spring, even before the forsthia(sp). Mine had a salmon color flower and was just great for those first of the year floral arrangements in the house. It's one of those bushes that creeps along if you don't keep an eye on it. Mine had fruit on it but they were too hard to be able to eat. And your right the birds loved it.

Wow, don't know what it is but I surely wouldn't want to have to handle it.

look into Chaenomeles genus . it is thorny and referred to as Quince, also.

I love the sweet scents wafting in the breeze. I stop to admire the vibrant colors of all living things. And people think me odd. Then ODD I am!!!

So far this thing doesn't have any flowers. And there's no way I can cut it and bring it into the house because of the thornes. It isn't a shrub. It's a tree. It will cut me to shreds through gloves if I get near it. It was a chore cutting those little pieces in the picture.

your pictures sure look a lot like my orange tree. I do not know its botanical name---and i am pretty sure it is dwarf. The only paper I saved said Jordan's (brand) Tropicaire Tree. I still have it in a pot.

Osage orange maybe? also known as Horseapple? Those things look like that and have evil evil evil thorns on them. Was there any large green fruits on the ground?
