Concerning birds, with FEW exceptions, the males are either MUCH more colorful than the females, or else the sexes are IDENTICAL (like Blue Jays or Crows). The reason for this, apparently, is that females have to be inconspicuous while on the nest, to protect eggs and babies, while the males have to be VERY conspicuous, to attract the attention of potential enemies, (like birders), away from the females, nest, eggs, and young, and to themselves, so that they can lead the enemies, (like bird photographers looking for a beautiful bird to photograph), away from the rest of their family.
