Okay, so I did one of my famous "preview the post, but forget to submit" so, let's try it again:

Today, I was messing around with my camera trying out the "P" mode (which means Program AE[I don't know what AE means]) trying to get pictures of birds flying.
This is what I got.

I just looked in my Sibley Guide to Birds and it looks like a juvenile Northern Goshawk.

Thorny - can you confirm that?

Being near feeders it could be a Cooper's or Sharp-Shinned Hawk. My best guess is a Juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Hawks are one of my weaker areas. Especially comparing Sharp-Shinned and Cooper's hawk. These two are nearly identical in EVERY way. Behavior, appearance, diet, and everything else. They both LOVE suburbs and houses and often stake out bird feeders in suburbs. I have a Cooper's that comes to my yard periodically to see what it can catch at my feeders......Epic fail in that aspect. I provide superb cover and protection for my feeder buddies.

thanks. We didnt' know if it was in the hawk family or falcon. We only saw him once and now he is gone.

This is my African Grey Parrot.


This Barred Owl thinks my African Grey Parrot is food. He slammed into the window by the Grey and sat out on the balcony rail, watching the parrot through the window all night. (photo made through windowscreen in Dec 2005)


Two years later, nearly to the day, the Barred Owl was back. This time I was out on the deck and made photos.

Welcome to the forum, decolady! I'm Thornius in Nashville, TN. I have a Barred Owl that perches on the roof of my house this time of year. Those are some great photos!

Barb, thanks so much. I take my camera out with me a lot when I'm at the farm and have been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to get photos of the birds. I've tried to get pictures of the heron before, but he normally flies off before I can get close enough to get a shot. That day I was really fortunate. I have friend who opens her bluebird boxes to get photos of the nest, eggs and babies, but I haven't been brave enough to try that yet. I worry about disturbing the mother and her abandoning the nest.

Cindy, thanks. I thought you might enjoy the picture of Picard. Even though this thread seemed to be about wild birds, his kind is wild in Africa. LOL. Poor Pico was so freaked out over the owl. His cage is right by the window and as we are in the woods, there are no window coverings. I had to get beach towels and cover his cage every night for about a week before the owl finally took off for other territory. And he still didn't sleep that first night. When the owl came back this past December it stayed about a week again. I was just amazed at how large the owls are. When he flew I ducked. His wingtip was right in front of my face and the beak and claws are pretty wicked looking. I decided I'd never complain about a bite from a Grey or Sun Conure ever again!

Thorn, Hi neighbor and thanks. Our farm is in Lincoln County so we are not that far from you. The owl was actually at our house in town (Huntsville, AL). A wooded part of town, but town nonetheless. I did some research after it showed up the first time and was surprised to find that barred owls have adapted to living close to humans. I love your photos, too! I'm jealous of your Cedar Waxwings. I have seen some this year for the first time in quite a few years and was just thrilled.

The Cedar Waxwings will be back in my yard in about two more weeks, after my Mulberries, just about the time my daughter comes back from visiting her boyfriend in Scotland with her FANTASTIC Canon camera. I am working on getting one like hers right now.

Today there was a female Downy Woodpecker at my suet feeders, and a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker in my pear tree. I also heard a White-Throated Sparrow singing across the street from my house.

Barb, thank you. Did you know that the signs which designate scenic routes in Tennessee have a bird on them? It's a Mockingbird, which is the Tennessee State Bird. We are very lucky to have so many beautiful birds around us. At the farm there is a mockingbird that sits at the very top of an ancient pear tree and "talks" to all who will listen.

Wow, your own forum Thorn? That's pretty cool. I'm glad there's a place here to incorporate birds. They're an integral part of our gardening, aren't they? The circle of garden life encompasses more than just the plants themselves.

I printed some of my photos of birds so I can remember the types an look in my book.
WOw it is hard remembering birds......Not like Gueny chickens..LOL

YOu Tennessee 2 are amazing .

Dodoge during a Mockingbird's Aerial Courtship display they repeat the SAME movements over and over again for hours on end at the same exact spot. So it is just a matter of getting your camera ready and snapping the picture at just the right moment and you've got it. It's when they are just flying THROUGH your yard that it's hard to get a good flight shot. YOU HAVE TO HAVE TIME TO PREPARE!

I'm with dodge on remember each type of bird. Some in my yard are so similar it's hard to tell them apart and then they fly away.

I've noticed that the hummers and woodpeckers are the only brave birds. The others fly at the least movement.

those bluebirds are so pretty. I love that color.

My mom's cat was attacked twice by an owl. They're so aggressive. I hear one by our barn sometimes but I leave it alone. I hope he doesn't attack our little dog.

IT's easy. Don't try to learn all the birds at once just pick maybe 100 different kinds of birds a day to memorize in excruciating detail down to their DNA codes, and in no time at all you will know EVERYTHING there is to know about EVERY species of bird in the WORLD!

Was that Yellow-Billed Cuckoo, Black-Billed Cuckoo, the European Cuckoo, or the other members of the Cuckoo family in the U.S.? These are Greater Roadrunner, Smooth-Billed Ani, and Groove-Billed Ani. That's all I can think of right now. The Yellow-Billed Cuckoo should be arriving here in Nashville any day, now.
