I'm not a big bird person, but last year we spotted a greater road runner. never knew something like that existed! huge bird, clumbsy flyer...more of a jumper or hopper. I kept saying he looks like a road runner but he's SO big. Looked up large road runner...and sure enough...that was what he was. we only saw him the one day, but I always wonder if we'll ever see him again???

you know thorny, ive watched the influx of armadilloes here in missouri over the last 15 years or so and it kinda makes me wonder why not roadrunners. do you think such a thing is possible? i cant really say that global warming is responsible for the armadilloes in missouri but i do know indeed that they are here. what could keep roadrunners from following suit? and ive begun to see scorpions here as well as far north as 30 miles from st louis.it truly amazes me to see this migration so far from thier previous homes.
I saw TWO dead armadillos on the side of the road near downtown Nashville, TN, about 5 years ago and called my local nature center who told me that armadillos arrived in Nashville in the late 90's. Road runners may be TOO habitat or climate adjusted to Texas to be able to survive in Missouri or Tennessee, but it's possible. I have seen small scorpions in southeast Tennessee almost 40 years ago. What I'D like to see in Tennessee or Missouri is Jackrabbits. Antelope, or Jackalopes. You may have Jackrabbits in Missouri, I'm not certain though. I have personally seen about a dozen Coyotes in the wild around Nashville in the last 20 years. And near Murfreesboro, for the last few years, have been a pair of Scissor-Tailed Flycatchers raising young in a nest. These are another quintessential Texas bird.

I never realized road runners were so local to texas. if you think they are a funny looking bird look up 'GREATER Roadrunner'. they are as big as a buzzard. the day I spotted the 'greater' roadrunner here in the yard I thought we had seen some really rare almost extinct bird. we have a group of regular road runners that hang out two houses down from us. about half the time we drive down the road we see them. and let me tell you they do run fast and it's a good thing cause they will NOT fly unless they absolutly have too. I still can't pass them with out saying 'beep-beep'!

like cricket says they can run very fast. You can always tell when they are going to run, too. They go, "Beep, Beep", stick their tongue out at you, and then are off like a rocket.
