Hey! I was hoping you all could give me some advice. My husband and I just purchased our first home. The yard includes three overgrown lilac bushes. I love having them, but they need trimming badly. How do I trim these without damaging them? What time of year should I do it?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

they bloom on the previous years growth, so if you're going to prune them, i'd do it really soon so that they have time to grow a little and set buds for next year.

if you feel they really need to be taken back severely, you can cut them back to a few feet high...you almost definitely will not have flowers next year though.

it's worth losing flowers for one season if they've been neglected for a long time and are extremely unruly.
