I took this picture of a VERY ragged Easten Tiger Swallowtail on my blooming Russian Olive bush this afternoon. These have become my favorite BUTTERFLIES to photograph. And they're rather common and docile, making them EASY to find and photograph.
BATTLE SCARS

EARTH FIRST! (we'll strip-mine the OTHER planets later.)
Naw, I just see a bird or butterfly a couple of times and its image and name just stick in my head. I also am very good about remembering numbers I think are important.

Speaking of Battle Scars, I went to the eye surgeon today. They are setting up an eyelid lift for me. My upper lids are starting to sag so much it is blocking about 2/3 of my visual field. It will return my visual field to normal (and make me look 10 - 15 years younger, too)

oops...I saw the topic title "Battle Scars" and thought I was gonna be able to post a picture of my stitched up belly here.
...nevermind.....
I was thinking the same thing...we'll have to start up a 'show me your scar' topic Then again we don't want to scare away anyone. My tummy looks awful right now.
Hoping everything goes well Thorny....
~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.
wow, you people have too much time on your hands, if I see a butterfly my camera is always in the house, if I see one out a window my camera is in the car

that is way cool Thorn. Now a personal question, will insurance pay for that surgery?
Yes. the doctor says this eye surgery is medically necessary to avoid severe reduction in my vision. It had been coming on so gradually I NEVER noticed the change, but they had a way of showing me the difference and I now see that my visual field is only 1/3 as large as it was 20 years ago. The insurance WILL pay 100% of the cost.

I am retired, Jennifer. I have two pensions to take care of living expenses. What I do now is nature photography. I ALWAYS have a digital camera and plenty of RECHARGEABLE batteries on me at ALL times. I wear my camera on a lanyard around my neck. Birds are what I mainly photograph, but I will always go for butterflies (as do MOST birders, we like butterflies almost as much as birds). I had a bird fly in the house last week. It is the third time that has happened. The first time I had an owl come in the house one night. The second time I had a Carolina Wren come in and perch on the back of the couch. This time it was a female House Sparrow on top of the armoire. So the camera is on my neck, even when I am indoors. I sleep with it on the bedside stand net to my bed at night.

I, for one, am glad you're retired. I've learned so much from your posts. Did you find your love for the birds and butterflies after you retired or were you always into it?
