The black is the male. If the black on his throat catches the sun JUST right your corneas will be burned out by the flash of laser red that comes from his throat......That's why they are called RUBY-Throated Hummingbirds and not, "COAL-Throated Hummingbirds"

Here are two pictures of the SAME male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird illustrating the color change from black to red. My friend olmail at Birders World took these pictures just seconds apart, this week.

They sure are constant on the feeder.

What useful purpose would the red be to them?

Naw I'm not sure of the exact lifespan. We are just now starting to study that. Most migratory birds return to the same areas they left. If they were born in the U.S., like hummers are, they will generally return to witin a few hundred yards of where they were born. I KNOW I have gotten the same hummers two or more years in a row. There's one I have named Hummercane Camille that has been here for the last two years and will probably come back to my yard in July......OH! And my son bought ANOTHER NEW Nikon SLR yesterday, the D80, and gave me the D40 he bought two weeks ago, so I now have the type of camera I have always dreamed about. I just need to get a good lense for it that should run about $200.00 - $300.00. The pictures I take THEN will be National Geographic or Life Magazine quality. I have been learning how to operate it with the basic lense that comes with it, but that lense has worse quality pictures than my old Olympus.

I just loooked up about the ruby-throated hummer. they live 3 to 5 years it said---but they CAN and have lived up to 12 years.

They also will return to the place where they were born. So perhaps this in my "Pete" that I have been seeing sitting on the tomato cage I have placed next to their feeder so they can rest at times.
