this post is really for diane, but is also because i am really proud of the students i work with and am so impressed with their intelligence, creativity, and abilities.
courtney gave me permission to take these pictures and she knew i was going to post them here. she's worked with me the entire time i've been at scad, but this year we have actually worked in the same office. she's a wonderful inspiration to me and to others.
the pictures in the next post are of her and one of her final projects. when i saw it, it thought it was something she sent off to have made, but actually, she did it all. the writing, illustrations, printing, binding, everything. if she doesn't get an A, i'm personally going to bop her professor!
diane, i'll call you one evening soon with the details of how she did it, and what she told me about it.
it is a children's book that was inspired by a combination of "thinking outside the box" and books she remembered from her childhood
she has been commissioned to make at least 2 more, and i told her i'd love one, but could never pay her what they are worth. i really thought it was professionally done. i would have never known it was for a grade
the class was a typography class and the instructor told the students their final project for their final "exam" was to make a book on where letters come from, thinking they would do a book on how different typefaces are developed. but courtney, ever the thinker, did this book, and i am so proud of her!
I'm Looking I'm Looking , 'gotta' headache and vision is blurred but I see enough to understand !
Courtney had a great theme idea for her Book!,, I remember taking my kids and grandkids to the postoffice for the first time when they were old enough to understand what the PO was,, they thought it was the coolest thing,, that is a great book for 3-7 year olds,, Tell Courtney thanks for sharing with us!
I like the idea of how she did the book, I wouldn't want illustrations,, I rather have the actual photo enhanced to put a more realistic 'touch' to my stories, so that the reader who doesn't believe in the magic of gnomes and fairys would be drawn into the photographs that then become magically believable,, My idea is that with some of the photographs ,, words need not be written in some scenarios. Just as Courtney did with the methods of transporting letters in her open book dbl center page picture, I like the size of the book.. and the fact she had various pages open to full pictures occupying 2 pages.. The larger the pictures and the better the illustration or photographs ,the better/faster the child's /adults imagination will be manipulated to leap onto the pages and go for a ride in the story .
I'm home every evening Jiffy,, ring a ding a ling me!
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
did I miss something?/ I thought that Jiffy was getting at the point that you could make books on your own and they would 'look' professionally done, and yet not be too costly for you---am I mistaken???
