Hey, before too long I plan on being a "yank". thumbup lol Possibly might look into having dual nationality. My mom has dual and so she's American and British.

I know way too much random trivia stuff. egad Sometimes too much for my own good....back in high school senior year, everyone skipped a class to go take the ASVAB test for the services.....I didn't really plan on enlisting, everyone just wanted to skip math--and by taking the test we got to do that. Well to my surprise I had the highest score in my whole grade out of the girls. They called the top 3 girls to the office. Thought I was in trouble at first. Then for the next year I got stalked bad by all the branches of the services. They'd even wait for me outside of my college classes.

I'm not saying I'm some kind of genius, but being smart is something I pride myself on--I'd rather be smart over being pretty anyday.....I skipped 2nd grade when we moved here from England, but that was because in England the schooling system is stricter and harder and I was well advanced on what 2nd grade taught over here.

BTW, most of my family is of course in England....in or around Manchester. I have a cousin in London....My brother in England lives in Wales right on the ocean. thumbup

lucky you with relatives living over on the British Isles--all you really have to worry about if you want to go visit is the cost of going over there---no hotels for you. clap

I thought it was automatic that if you were born in one place but sought citizenship in another country, you automatically had dual citzenship??? am i confused???

no, it just how things work---it is not that they were being mistreated or anything in their home country--they just chose to move to the USA--
so they do not have a reason to denounce the 'mother' country.

---As I understand it, it is something offered to people born in another country but that are choosing to live in the US.--My Uncle was given instant dual citizenship--he was born on the ship going over to England--

his mom was born here his dad was born in England---

what i am not clear on is if my grandfather had gotten his US citizenship yet at that time or not.--No one ever told me if grandpa had dual citizenship or not.

My daddy did......USA was his dream and he kept it.
Now I hear Spanish is taking over lingo in some city in Florida.
Guess I will make them speak Polish in Pa.

That's quite an opinion Barb....

I do love the US...I've lived here since I was 7 years old. This is pretty much my home--and where most of my memories have happened. This is the country I love. But I love England too. My history is there--but not just my history but my family. It's my heritage. The US is my present and future.....I'm proud of being English, but I'd also be proud to be American. Dual Nationality is neat. If it's out there to get for me, why not get it? I don't want to totally denounce England....Mom has dual nationality and she's as proud to be American as she is to be English. It was her right to have that. Her Dad was American but her mom is English and she was born in England.

If a person was in my situation or mom situation they might feel the same way.

sorry Carol, I read that post but must've totally skipped that last sentence.

I've been doing research today on it and it turns out that if I do get naturalized as a US citizen I will still have the UK citizenship. The UK doesn't denounce my citizenship, they just sort of act like I'm still just their citizen.

Same with the US....If I were American and were getting UK citizenship they wouldn't get rid of my US citizenship.

Some countries don't work that way--and you can only be one or the other.

They both sort of act like I'm only theirs so to speak. Even though when you naturalize you have to denounce your allegiance to another country when you are sworn in. Weird...but I guess if I just become a US citizen I'll still have both.

I thought that was how it worked--but you never know--rules get changed all the time.--So you will have the best of both worlds--good for you!!!! clap

Thank you! I thought it was exciting to find out! thumbup

I think my parents, well my dad especially, would be a little disappointed if I just threw away my heritage. Mom loves America, she's American and English...but Dad's heart is just in England. He'd move back if he could. I mean that was his home most of his life. He sacrificed for mom by moving over here....Kind of sweet really that he would move to a totally new country for moms happiness.
