That's right, Bill! A yellow-Shafted species of orthern Flicker, a Woodpecker that feeds on ants on the ground, more of a (Dirt)Pecker. It's not very clear, but that appears to be a female.

They have red "V" on the back of the neck. Male Yellow-Shafted Woodpeckers have a black "Malar" (moustache) on their face. Females don't.

//www.agardenersforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/207245#Post207245 was buried on page 4. The first set of pictures are bad, but I got better pictures further down in the post.

Lucky you to have one (or two) they are very cool birds to watch. It'll be back. thumbup

Thanks......
Guess that is what I hear knocking on the trees behind our house.

Your first picture is a Male Eastern bluebird. One noticeable fieldmark of bluebirds is their "Hunchbacked" appearance. Their heads appear to be directly atached to their shoulders with no VISIBLE necks. Robins and Mockingbirds and of course Great Blue Herons show a LOT of neck, but bluebirds have a hunched, shrugging posture. You first photo shows this posture quite well, Dodge.

It could very well be the kids. A female bluebird will prouce 4-6 batches of eggs each Summer, starting in March. ALL the young stay with the parents for a year and help their Mom and Dad feed and care for each new batch of young as it comes along. By Fall, a Pair of bluebirds will have produced a family flock of 10 - 20 kids that stay together as a flock until spring. They then split up to look for mates and start family flocks of their own. That is why it is VERY IMPORTANT to put up 5 times as many nest boxes as the year before. The first year you start out with ONE nest box. Year Two, you should set out SIX nest boxes spaced 300 feet (100yards/meters) apart. Year THREE, You will need to have THIRTY nest boxes. Year FOUR, get busy. You need to build and/or buy ONE HUNDRED FIFTY nest boxes to keep up with all the young of previous years. It can soon become a full time profession. I have personally built and put up HUNDREDS of bluebird nest boxes here in Tennessee.
