How easy, or hard, is it to put new front pockets in pants/shorts?

I have two pairs of shorts that I like, but the front pockets were made out of very cheap material and are now mostly iron on patches.

I do have a sewing machine and can sew a mostly straight line.

Is it doable? Or should I just stop being a cheapskate and go buy some new shorts?

Sewing on front patch-style pockets is easy with a machine IF you have what is known as a "swing arm" -- a way to make the platform of the machine more narrow. Otherwise, you can do it, but you have to bunch up the fabric all the way around so as not to sew the shorts closed!

It is far easier to sew in the side pockets which just get put in the seam on the sides. This can even be done with pants/shorts that didn't have any side pockets originally. You can buy premade pockets at the fabric shop, too, or make your own.

New shorts never hurt, though!

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.
