I want to plant some flowers in the planter that surrounds my tree. We are having a bit of a drought out here (Cali) and I want a flower that doesn't take a lot of water so it doesn't take it form the tree, and is good around trees. Any ideas?

Hi Eva. What kind of tree is it. Most rees are very deep rooted and flower roots are too shallow to take up valuable water from the trees. So that is probably not an issue. Even some shrubs will not compete too much. Is the tree a broad shady one or narrow enough to allow for some sun or a lot of sun?

Ok, simple shade plants are imapatiens (impatiens holstoii), primroses (primula, different types), caladiums, Asparagus ferns, ferns, hostas. I would go to my local home depot or lowes and see what plants, flowers they keep under the shades in their outdoor areas. I also have gardenias and hydrangeas in pretty shady areas to protect them from our brutal summer heat and the winds we get.
