What do you do in texas?//// I kill bromeliads here in texas! actually, I got the brom's when my mother passed away. that is why I'm so determined to get at least one of these to live. I've about given up though, as I've killed so many of the pup's already. I quit working a couple of years ago to take care of my mentally and pysically disabled mother. when she past away we considered gas prices and the distance I had to drive to work and day care cost.....it really didn't make any sense for me to go back to work. so for now (completely out of my element) I'm a stay home mom.

Nothing wrong with that..Your sound like a good person.. One which kids will be glad to see when they walk in the door after school......THat makes kids happy. I was stay at home mom, till son graduated. Then Hubby was forced into retirement, and I went to work to make ends meet. I hated it , but it did help.
We were scared.

I wished everyone was so supportive of stay home mom's. I have 'friends' that are very resentful towards me, because 'I don't work'. there were seveal years where our kids were left with shakey (very little...scary) supervision! i'm thankful and blessed that I can be here for them. but, I'm getting off on a tangent........ME NO HIJACKER!

PS......Your on the right track. The world would be different if moms and dads cared who watched their kids. My son was no problem at all..... Honor student all thru school , never smoked or drank a drop. Won a scholarship to college and graduated. However he prefers blue collar jobs......LOL I admire you greatly for that.. I was only blessed with one, and had many happy memories.

I usually plant my cukes and beets in the back field, didn't feel well enough this year. Now I'll have to hit the farmer's market for veggies to make pickles. Dodge, have you ever planted 'multiplier onions'? DH picked them up for me and I had no clue about them, seems like I'm only getting tops and the onion itself isn't growing.....

Never heard of multilpier onions. I use sets .. Someone gave me walking onions , but they were nothing to brag about...... I have a good catch of Chives that multiplys and tastes just as good as an onion. We eat the tops till our sets are ready..They come back and multiply.
Bottoms arent big .

Hi, My name is Julie. I'm new here. That Bromelaid that you have pictured, is that the red bloom? If so I think I have two that I paid $3 each for and I need to know how to care for them. Sounds like they may be hard to raise huh? Your garden and flowers are beautiful! I have a big garden we've been working on for quite sometime. After I figure out how to send pics I'll send some. Just wanted to drop a line and say you have a beautiful garden and have done a great job with it. Wow, I'm shocked I picked a bargain and it's all green...I didn't know they could be so beautiful!!! I'll have to tell Mom I finally found a bargain! ;) Have a great day!

Hi Julie , Nice meeting you ..Your close to Penna. Glad you got the Brome...First time for me also. Yes I think it is a red bloom Did yours have directions? Or a bloom? This is the only one they had wit a bloom. I brought it home in the rain and let it out there to wash off for a while....It was in bad shape. So I gave it a larger pot yesterday and soil. Washed the leaves off and it is inside. The directions I read, requires 75ยบ .. Our nites are lower so I took it inside , in the North window ......Not to be in the sun, but bright window. Don't water often , it likes drying out between .. Say one time a week . I never had one. Thanks alot for th the compliment. Hope your mom is proud of you. What is green the flower/

Hi. I used to have Broms in Florida. All i ever did was keep the center where the bloom comes out of from drying out. I think that is all i ever did. To much water and they rot. I mean in the ground. There should be more information on the net somewheres on taking care of them. That is a gorgeous flower on that plant. Love them but most have sharp points on the end of the leaves and i cannot get scratched or cut so have to leave them for others to enjoy.

bromeliads are epiphytes and don't need regular potting soil. best in orchid mix or moss. keep the 'cup' at the center filled with water. if it's a large cup, pour it out every couple weeks and put fresh in...top off in between as needed. smaller size cup you can just keep refilling every week or so. they like being misted, too. so, dodge, you're little rain shower/bath that you gave your new plant was a good thing!
they live on trees in the rain forest - near the top so they can get to the sun, so a bright, even downright sunny, spot is best. they don't like to be cold, so nothing under 55. will do fine in hot & humid weather.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news...once they bloom they die...they do put off tons of pups though, so it's a matter of keeping them going and you'll always have them.

I repotted it and didnt over water , as to not disturb it ...... they are very slow growers and slow die-ers. so you should be able to enjoy your blooms for quite some time! I kept my brom's somewhat shady, but I had a different variety. there are tons of varieties, if you could look up and identify which variety you have it may give you more of an idea of how much sun it needs. or if your lazy, like me, just keep an eye on it and it'll tell you if it's getting too much sun.
