I seriously cannot see it going away!! It makes things easier and the natural tenancy is to gravitate towards things that are easy and/or more efficient.
That is not the issue......In the engineering end...They have run out of numbers for the Higher uppers who make the sites possible. What ever they are called.......They had 30 years worth of numbers, which could run out in 3 more years...... Noting to do with us......They have a new thing..to replace it , which is supposed to be hard and limited.. I cant find the story now .. FOx had it on , yesterday.
thanks for posting the link to the article. I went on fox looking for it, didn't find it right away, then got side tracked reading about the new digital tv conversion. ha ha. interesting! I can see how it is happening. the internet, after all, was given to the general public before it should have been. it wasn't designed for general public use in the first place.

Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it. ~Russel Baker
if you ever look at the address bar you'll see the site address with www. at the beginning.
that's not the only one. there's www1. www2. and so on. i've seen www6. recently.
yes, the numbers for the sites are being used up - they just added new 'area codes' to make more room...and the 'new' codes overlay what's already there - like how we've got 2 area codes here (the new one overlays the original) as well as in philadelphia. other areas of the country have done the same.

Adding one digit to all IP addresses (like they periodically do with phone numbers) would create something like a trillion additional possible IP addresses. The internet founding fathers underestimated when they set up the system. There are way too many rich folks who would become poor folks if the internet failed. Would you have a computer?, or windows software?, norton? if there was no internet? I wouldn't and I have 5 computers right now! (have to have a computer every 15 feet or so....) Remember all the Y2K hubbub that never really came to pass?
Bill, what you posted makes good sense and is quite reassuring. Although I hadn't heard the report Dodge posted about, it certainly didn't sound promising.
And yes, I well remember the furor over Y2K. I knew people back home who were actively planning for the collapse of society and who were stocking up on dehydrated foods and buying generators, etc. I thought all that panic was a crying shame, I really did.
So thanks for your explanation, Bill.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart? The other heart was given to another for us to find.
the extra digits on the site numbers has been happening for almost 10 years now. the extra layers of the web - the www1, 2, 3, etc. - is a more recent addition - only for about 4 years or so. and they're up to at least 6 already - probably more than that, actually.
Ok, the Internet isn't going anywhere, no way, no how; too many business make major money with it...
www, www1, www2, etc are subdomains, they don't "exist" so to say, the only "meat" paid for is "thesite.tld"; any "thesite" can have as many subdomains that they want, it's their domain afterall. These subdomains are specified by their webserver configuration and are unlimited (however, if they keep track of traffic via a web based logger their stats will not all be attributed to their main site).
Generally speaking, these subdomains point to other servers within their network, or even specific services; such as "mail", or "dns", etc.
As for IP addresses, they won't just add one octset to the end, they actually made the IPv6 specification already to replace the current IPv4 implementation.
One thing to keep in mind is, with all internet technologies, there are clearly defined RFC's which specify every little ounce of information anyone could ever want to know about the item in question. There are also official organizations set forth to manage them (Such as ICANN.

I've been saving for years to replace my Laptop that I bought in 2000 that's literally broken; but funding never permits as I tend to blow it on other things, like cloths for my kid...
Darn my high standards with PC components...
It's funny though, cas when I bought my laptop, I made sure it was the best I could afford, which still beats some of todays specs ;)... (1gb ram, 40gb hd, 1.7ghz p4 processor)

This stupid NO DIAL TONE thingy that pops on here frequently...... Question.....Isnt that the Server , no my line/
I beent with another server and it did that also.. I think they say that to cover their tracks??????
I had that problem (the no dial tone message) I think it was my server as well.--esp since the night before we had a storm and there was a recorded message at their place that said thanks for understanding about the internet that was down----My phone was working well and every connection of my computer was good to go.----The tech told me, their end was fine (yea right) and to go buy another ethernet cable, that phone lines 'ate' them, frequently. val laughed & told me to unplug everything for about 10 minutes.--but before I did that I ran a diagnostic with my vista windows and at the end of all my time,-(i changed nothing)- all was well---I was magically 'connected'.
