Well, Ethernet Cable connects your PC to a cable/dsl modem; whereas telephone cable connects you to the telephone line for a standard modem...
So, the big question is, broadband or dialup?
If it's broadband (cable/dsl) and it gives you a dialup error, then it means your computer isn't able to read the broadband signal sent by your isp and is poping up the internet connection wiard (or assuing you have a 56k isp)...
This issue would be either your ISP is down, or your connection to them is being blocked (cablemodem off, router off, etc); generally I say to just unplug your hardware (well, router and cable modem) for a couple of seconds, then plug it back in; they all should have status lights on them which can usually tell you what is going on.
If you're on dialup and it's saying no dialtone and you're SURE that the phone line is active (as in you get a dialtone and are able to call someone) you'll want to make sure that your computer is plugged into the phoneline and that nothing is wrong with the wire connecting it to the phone line (try plugging a spare phone into this wire, can you hear a dialtone?)

I'm honestly suprised that there are still dialup internet providers... I mean, broadband's price has come down so much
They have to upgrade the phone lines and equipment in a lot of areas before broadband is available. We hill folk aren't exactly at the top of their upgrade list...
In Pennsylvania , they dont even have the lines laid in rural areas for Wireless. Dialup is very popular in our area......However we do have a cell phone tower on my farm.....Can't win them all.
Lots of the internet providers, are kids out of college who start their own business.(Probably like you)
I did take some coarses on computer , but that was when they said Internet was too expensive for a home use.
Even things like cable tv, it comes to the end of our lane, but if we want it We pay for the cable to be brought up here, and labor.. No way. We use the dish.
My son is in town and has Comcast, however his wife has a computer job at home , so she can sit baby and work. Over 100 month, but they have the tv with it .
I just had to buy 2 converter boxes for out tvs.....Rural life is great. But we dont get frills .
Yes, living in the boondocks has is benefits and its drawbacks.
Joani
I arent in boon rocks...Nearest town is about 3 mile . I am in the center of about 5 towns..... We love country life..... Where else could I have so many flowers and trees?? b
Mine is dialup..And yes I am positive I can call out and the spare phone has a dial too............
Now what?
mine is DSL--and I was using hte phone to talk to a tech that my server provides----and I had checked all cabels & such--all was plugged in---(did I mention I have a wireless router?//---my DD's want to be able to use their laptops when they come over---
but here it is all good now--so I think Mine was a server issue.

If their comcast is over a month they'd have the superpack, which is far more than just internet; it'd be internet and telephone and/or cable tv...
I'm on Comcast here, with the premium plan, and it's only like $60/mo

Not necessarily! We were finally able to get high speed a few months ago and before that I had called every internet provider and no one offered it at our house. So...dial-up it was until they finally got smart and offered out our way. We are definitely not at the top of their priority list but just because we live in the country does not mean we don't like to have TV and internet too!!
a friend of mine lives at just the esdge of town and she cannot have cable. if the DSL didn't go thru the phone lines she would still be on dail-up too.
