After 18 months of being unemployed (with the exception of like 3 weeks before Christmas), Stephen finally has a job!!! I'm very proud of him! He will be a corrections officer at a state prison about an hour away from home. He will be a state employee, so health insurance will be at no cost to us and the retirement benefits are really good as well. Yay!!!!

Awesome Jenn! Prisons, both state and federal, are big business around here. One stretch of our road has 4 of them--one is max security. They are all main employers of our area.

Congratulations to him!!!!!! I hope he really loves it! My best friend Mel was a correctional officer for a few years. thumbup

I hope you don't mind me telling you a few things....I know a lot of the spouses around here say that their husbands got meaner...carrying the work home with them sort of thing--that's why my best friend quit, she could feel herself getting meaner and she didn't like it. So hopefully he can leave work at work. And also there was a prisoner up here that was beaten badly by officers....thing is no body would admit blame of course, so the whole tier of employees lost their jobs. Even my friends fiance, he had nothing to do with it. But because nobody would admit they did it everyone lost out....the union is fighting for them now but it's been a LONG time. So if he sees anything inappropriate going on I'd tell him to leave ASAP....get someone else...or go anywhere that's visible by others that can attest to him not being part of it.

Not trying to scare you with that....but sometimes the officers can get out of hand with the prisoners...and it's best to have a plan for if that were to happen. kissie

The insurance and benefits are great! That's VERY exciting for you guys! That's one main reason to get a specific job anymore, just because the insurance and benefits are good. clap

Congrats, Jenn and Stephen. Even if it isn't a career to take to retirement it is a wonderful place to start.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

I think it would depend on the person, my cousin works as a guard at a prison and he has not changed, he's been there almost 18 years and still the same person.

I'm really happy for you Jenn, it'll be nice not having to watch your pennies every day, I've been there and done that and it's no fun at all. You'll be able to enjoy life more. grin

It's nice when you don't have to worry about the little things that pop up and ruin your budget

My friend would give you the shirt of her back she's so nice. I think the job was just making her not so much mean, maybe that was the wrong word. But she was very angry & stressed a lot because she didn't really like her job. She got a lot of flak for being a female guard and that was hard on her. Most of the inmates were very nice to her though, she showed them respect but was firm with them and they showed her respect. They knew it was a 2 way street.

Will Stephen have gun training and all that? I guess he will right? It's a great job Jenn. All the benefits are fantastic for being a state employee, and he'll be able to work his way up the rankings...... thumbup

you can get stress from any job and some jobs are worst than others. I worked in an office once and there was a position there in the office (and it paid really good..we are talking 25.00 an hour back 20 years ago) and 5 people who took that job was there less than 6 months and killed their self over the job, one guy just knew he could do it and blew his head off. So stress comes with any job, that was a marketing job

Yep, stress is with almost all jobs nowadays. It was just harder for her I think because it is a predominantly male employed career....you don't see too many female correctional officers, at least not around here. Out of her class of 40 people she was one of 3 females. A lot of the guys she worked with gave her a hard time because of it....so she had that going on plus the stress of the actual job.

It's so sad when people kill themselves over a job...there are other ways out....

Loz, I know you were not trying to be a downer. :) We saw that happen a bit to Stephen's dad when he worked at a federal prison as a physician. I really think what got to him was the politics involved with being a physician there.

Stephen will be at a higher security prison...not sure if it is called a maximum security prison tho. We've heard its a good prison to start at....it is a higher security, but there are fewer inmates and there aren't many incidents that go on there.

He'll start on August 4th at the prison and then on the 16th he starts his 5 weeks of training. The 5 weeks of training will be rough because the training facility is far enough away that he won't be coming home in the evenings....he'll be staying there. BUT the facility is about 45 minutes south of where my parents live, so what we are planning is that for weeks 2 and 4 of his training I will go down and stay with my parents so that I have help with the kids....and go shopping at Ikea, of course!! lol ...ssshhhhhh!

Shop til you drop! lol I won't tell! grin

Ooo, the 5 weeks of training will be tough....I'm glad that you'll get to go stay with your parents. So he will be staying at your parents the whole time? Or do they put him up in a room?

It's a great job to do if he can stick with it....a lot of the guys up here retire really early. thumbup

I think what was said about being respectful to the inmates is some wonderful advice! my husbands friend did guard work for many years. one day he up and quit. said he was threated pretty badly and wouldn't talk about it much. my cousin also worked as a guard for a while. he quit and never did say why...but he is a job hopper so you never know with him?
I wish her all the best!

lol DH's job comes with 'free anger management' councelling...as well as so many free psychiatrist sessions a year also.

I have a friend who's a prison guard...it's like any other job, you just got to learn to leave the stress at work.

Loz, he probably won't be staying at my parent's house while he is down there. I think he'd go insane! lol That is why I'm only staying down there 1 week at a time!!!! lol They will put him in a room close to the training center.

I think Stephen will do just fine with leaving the stress at the prison. He'll have an hour drive home to get rid of it also. Thinking about it, it can't be as bad as when he was working at 'the shack'. That was an incredibly stressful job...especially during the holidays and there was soo much along the lines of business politics it was crazy.

Of course, I don't put up with much crap either, so if he brought home some anger and took it out on me, he'd hear about it!

Ah, we don't want him going insane now do we? haha I'm sure he'll do great in his training. thumbup It's just exciting he has a job! I knew he'd been unemployed for a while so this is really a great blessing.

My brothers job gives counseling.....he works for a dental HMO company on the phones all day with people yelling at him a lot. Actually they even give "mental health" days. One day off a year that's paid.... lol
