I think planting in shoes is very cute, but I've never seen a pair I wanted to use as planters before. Then I saw these: Frog Kid Rainboots
I think they would be adorable planters... Haven't bought any yet, but I'm tempted.
If I were to give in to temptation, should I drill holes in the bottom of the boots? What kind of plant would compliment them? The best I can do light-wise is partial shade, and it would have to be a relatively small plant.
There's also a pair that are camo colored, and a pink pair with kitten faces on the toes. I think the frog ones are my favorites though.
I would definitely pop a hole in the bottom for drainage. I have a pair of my bro's old leather boots outside planted with sedum, I put holes in the top of the foot, more sedum there. If you wwant just in the top impatiens, petunias?
I've done that. Little red rainboots filled with crush rock then soil and added False rock Cress in them. The boots faded badly in the sun though and the heat killed the rock cress. I think drainage was the problem.
I've picked up another pair though a few years ago and have forgot about them until reading this. You can get second hand rain boots for $1 at the thrift store. I'll try it again but with drainage holes this time. Annuals might be a better idea also than the perennials I had originally done.
I'd like to put them in a little plastic wagon with flowers as well. Maybe with a little rake and shovel from the dollar store, oh, the wheels are turning now.
Thanks for reminding me again.
~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.
I found a few ceramic containers at one of my favorite stores that are shaped like shoes. I thought they were pretty darned cute. Since my area is pretty dry and hot in the summer,(I live in Southern Idaho--semi-arid desert), I am a little reluctant to do this. I'm sure everyone's shoe-pots are adorable, though!
I just bought a new ceramic shoe at the Dollar General last week for $3.50. It has hedgehogs on it. I put some portulacas in it because they have shallow roots and are very drought tolerant.
Now I know what to do with my husbands old cowboy boots that he has worn a hole in the sole, all I have to do is make the hole on the inside and BAM!!!!!!!! new planter, since the lawn crew took all of my pots last week . Thanks for the ideas.
They were doing a "yard cleanup" day, and though they were told not to take anything to with gardening, they took about $40 worth of pots, some painted boards for our raised beds that we just have not put in place yet and 2 of my plant stands. Why I don't know, when I went and talked to the manager she said and I quote "I'm sorry, they were not supposed to. Go check the dumpster, that is where they put all the stuff." So DH and I went dumpster diving and guess what: nothing was there, this was like an hour after they did it and it was not there. Probably took it home for their wives I bet. I tell my manager this and she says there is nothing she can do about it.
