James I dont have a laptop. My question....is if you buy that, does it go on the same server as your on, or must you subscribe with another? And pay 2 ?
Dodge I can answer that,, I have the same server on both the laptop and desktop,, I have wireless tho it isn't neccessary to have wireless,, But what's the point of having a laptop if you don't have a wireless server,,
I still use the desk top a lot,, because I haven't yet transfered a lot of files over,, I need to put those files on a jumpdrive,, just for back up,, I kinda want to keep this laptop lightly loaded,, although I do have a lot more memory on here than the desktop,

A laptop is GREAT. I rarely use the battery on mine, I just plug it in wherever I go unless I'm out by the pond.
I have a router. The desktop plugs into that. And the laptop picks up the internet signal from it wirelessly. I didn't change my internet. I had DSL, I just had to buy a router for my laptop. It cost me about $50.
Do you have cable internet then? I guess you do if it's thru Comcast? I thought if you have cable internet then it's automatically hi speed?
You should still be able to get a router and pick up the signal thru it. You wouldn't pay for having 2 computers hooked up to the net. You would pay for the router.
Like I have Verizon DSL. I had that back when I had just my desktop computer. Back then I just had a small DSL modem connected to it. Then when I got the laptop I called them and bought a router from them. That replaced the old modem, cost me $50, and then I was able to use my laptop and desktop. Both at the same time.
My internet plan never changed. I pay $14.99 a month. Same as I did when I just had my desktop computer.
No......My son has cable internet and service.. WIfe works from home on the company computer....Cost 99. a month I thing..
I have slow dialup.....Very slow............I have no idea why they told them comcast wouldnt ........ He was going to buy her laptop till he heard???????????????? Maybe penna is different.
yep the kids all 4 have computers so there is at least 2 to a house--and as a matter of fact Emily & her DH have 3 or 4 all one server, and one price---Valarie & her DH have 2 or 3 computers all 1 server--one price---

yes Dodge----the internet service comes into the home--not to each computer----so one charge PER HOME.
if I understand things correctly it is jsut the connecting each to a line---(hence why the wireless is so good)-----if one wanted to go to the trouble of connecting each computer I do not see why you could nto have one in each room--and the type-(laptop or desk top) would not matter. Only if you wanted a lap top to be wireless you would have to have a wireless router p ut on teh desktop---(am I right guys??)
my SIL fixed mine up in no time at all.----not that I have a lap top but the 4 of them do----

dialup sucks; it's slooooooow... But, i'm not sure how they calculate rates on dialup... i used it on two machines when i had it eons ago...
With multiple computers, so long as they're plugged into a router and the router is plugged into your dsl/cable modem, you only use one ip address online and they don't charge you for any more as you're not utilizng extra ip address space...
Routers are cheap now adays, like $30 or so... Go linksys, they're pretty easy to work for newbies...

Slow dialup is a must here......no lines for dsl or wireless rural area.
Ok......I must check out router then......I know it is slow, but I dont make money with mine, like james....LOL My son has comcast and she works at home.

Thanks folks for the Interviews.Love ya all. :ding:
When I had dialup it was like $25/mo; I'm on cable now for $50/mo, not really expensive at just double  I figure it, one less dinner out a month lol...
BTW, I wrote up an article on sharing an internet connection between computers on a Cable/DSL connection last night, it's over at Back of the Web

are you saying that you do not have phone service at your home dodge?/ my DSL comes in thru my phone line--at least that is what I thought. all they had to do was run a seperate phone line for it with in my house--and I am certain it only became seperate after it was at the house.-- but I may jsut be confused.
when my communicatiosn company came out with 'packages" it was the same money for my land line, DSL and mid ranged cable that i was paying before,-- for a land line---dial up and basic cable.---so good for me!!!

So Diane, you don't have trouble with your batteries then? And you guys are really going to know how stupid I am with this ?
I now have a laptop from work. At work it is plugged into the wall and hooked up to the internet. To work from it at home will I have to unplug my home computer from my internet and plug this is? I have cable?
sheri, short answer is that you can get a wireless router or a regular router from walmart or other stores that will let you have both plugged in at once. you are probably using an ethernet cable at work, so plugging into your phone line won't work anyway unless you have dsl or cable. if you have dsl or cable, you should have a router anyway, because you need one to make them work.
as for battery life, mine is good for about 2 hours which is enough for me. but if i ever decide to get another laptop, i will be looking at a bigger battery. the problem is the bigger the battery, the heavier the laptop.
batteries are generally rated at 1.5 hours and 3 hours (4 cell battery vs 8 cell battery) at full power (longer at partial power/dimmer monitor).
You can buy offbrand batteries for like $10-$30, so you can have several if you wanted to.
@Best, you'll need some sort of utility installed on the computer at work to connect to it, such as "Go to my PC" or PCAnywhere; the prior will allow you to connect through a router without having to make changes; PCA however can be fickle as all hell...

Well, when you're not pushing it to the max i'm sure you could extend time out ;)... Plus the MAH of the battery would also extend its time ;) lol...
I'm lucky if mine lasts an hour lol... But my laptop is broken now; I had a pen on my keyboard while i went to make dinner, Trey wanted the laptop closed, so he closed the lid, then sat on it till it closed... popping the hinge on the side, so now the laptop doesn't close at all lol...

I can watch 2 dvd movies back to back with my battery approx 3 to 3& 1/2 hours,, when I'm editing pictures and / or roaming around on the net and on here it will last approx 5-6 hours Not sure to the extent,, I only let it get down 3/4 and I charge it again,,

I rarely ever use the battery. First of all I can barely see the screen when it's on battery...and secondly, it's no biggy for me to drag the powercord around. Everywhere I sit has an outlet next to it.
But having a good battery is nice. Just in case you need to use it.
Well, there should be a Function (Fn) key on the keyboard, probably next to the left hand shift key; then there should be a "light" icon, probably either on your arrow keys or one of your function keys... When you press these keys together it'll adjust your monitor brightness (or dimness); you can do this on battery or cable power, and the settings will remain for the next time you're on power or battery... Thus allowing you to make things more comfortable while on battery ;)...
