Yes, red castor bean. It can get rather large, and is very poisonous. They also tend to reseed. I started one several years ago and I always have several come back each year from seed. Mine usually get about 6-7 ft. tall. There's also a green one that can get even bigger.

I've had a caster for a little over a year. didn't know what it was, in fact, until I posted on this website in mystery plants. mine never got over a foot tall, with no more than 3-4 leaves at a time. found out what it was and moved to full sun. Wha-Laaaa! it is now 5 foot and blooming! I just love mine! they like lots of sun, the more the better. if you want more next year you should save some seed. I don't think they'd come back from seed where you are dodge. they are tropical. quite agressive in tropical and sub trop climates.

yup castor bean plant. from it is derived one of the deadliest poisons known to man. ricin. very beautiful plant though. am kind of suprised at how easy this plant is to obtain seeds for and grow. dont really know how hard it is to process into ricin.(dont want to know either ,by the way),just seems like it should be regulated if it is indeed as deadly as i have read. anyone got any insight?

just don't eat it and you'll be fine. and if i'm remembering right, every part of that plant is poisonous. stem, leaves, seeds, ect. what makes it so dangerous is that the seeds are very pretty. so small children might grab one to look at, then put it in their mouth.

the more I look at this dodge, I don't think it is a caster plant. I was looking at mine outside earlier today and noticed only the newest leaves are purple but the older ones turn green. also mine has seven points on the leaf shape. your leaves look more oak like. I can't tell what the stem and leaf stem look like on yours, but on mine the leaf stems come out at.....can't think of that fancy word.....put it this way...one leaf comes out of the stem on one side then farther up on the main stalk another leaf comes out on the other side. I think we may need to do some more guessing on this one.

They'll grow in your sun dodge, they just keep a nicer colour in shade.

Hmmm, mine have never reseeded by themselves. So I'm thinking that they need time to grow before the cold sets in.
