I am typically skeptical of "for free" sites, but this one does seem legitimate. The Cornell (University) Lab of Ornithology endorses this project: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/celebration/temporary/the-great-sunflower-project

Maybe everyone here already knows this and I am just daft, but I found the cheapest (other than free) way to mass plant sunflowers is to use blackoil sunflower seeds sold as bird seed. It sells for less than $15/20 lbs. I planted a 100' row edging my veggie garden (in my front yard!) and used roughly 4-5 cups of seed. I can testify that these sunflowers attract bees... and it's a hoot to see the finches hanging upside-down getting at the seeds are the seeds ripen.

Once u plant the blackoil sunflowers they come up every year as we got them started by feeding birds. Since they went into bloom the finches have been coming in daily even though i doubt the seeds r ready for them. they get to be huge plants. Much bigger than the grey sunflowers. Small blooms but so many of them.

I signed up and am going to start checking to see how many bees visit our plants in 5 minutes like the site mentions. I think this is a neat idea. Just wish i knew what kind of bees they r. another good plant is Bee Balm. Last year i planted two tiny plants. one pink and one burgundy. This year I have a huge bed of them that came up and the bees just love them. Is a wonderful plant for bees, hummingbirds and butterfies.
