Johnny, in an effort to be helpful, put my iron skillet in the dishwasher. Is it ruined?
Since I've been here I've had 2 students (1 twice) in here because of head lice. Scratch, scratch, scratch. Am I going to get lice from them scratching their heads in my office? They have to sit in here until their parent comes which was about an hour.
Soap itself can unseason a well seasoned pan, so grease 'er up, Sheri. I know it can be a bit tedious, but it is worth the effort. There is nothing so beautiful as a well seasoned iron pan.
There is a small city two towns down the coast from us that usually has a head lice epidemic each winter and State nurses come into the schools to help the school nurses deal with the problem. One school got so bad it had to be closed entirely and fumigated!
You be careful!
Merme
We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart? The other heart was given to another for us to find.
I don't know how long your hair is sheri, but if you can get it up in a tight pony tail it will help. the lice do not like heads they can't crawl around in. it makes for a very hostile enviornment. (it won't kill them if they are already in there, but they won't likely jump on a head of hair that is pulled up tight)
and, yes I agree on the pan. just re-season.

Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it. ~Russel Baker
but on your cast iron, you probably want to use animal fat (bacon grease or lard) instead of vegetable fat because vegetable fat gets "tackier" or "sticky" faster than animal fat. just an fyi.
also, as short as your hair is, if you keep spray lysol in to spray around where the children sit waiting on their parents (after they leave, of course) you should be ok.
and a funny, i had a student come to my office a couple of weeks ago (a summer student), her mother called her and told her to get checked asap, her little sister had been sent home from camp with them. she was so embarrassed and didn't know who to ask. since i looked to be about her mother's age, she asked me! she was clean.
