Well it depends what we're talking here...
CABLE and DSL modems comonly use Ethernet ports for connecting; some modems have a USB port as well and can be plugged into your computer to access the internet.
If we're simply talking 56k randomness, you can buy a USB external modem, however this is the only way it'd be able to plugin to your computer... Most modems will take and use the serial or paralell port on your computer to connect.
And I've been away, my network switch burnt out, and I have $0 to replace it lol ($0 of $65 lol)...

sorry dodge didn't mean to give bad information. When I think modem I think old 56k thing. Tells you how old and out of date I am.
I'm so excited that you are getting the new stuff. That's going to be so cool.

I'm going to assume they're some sort of broadband ISP, as 56k and ISDN don't support 1mb connections...
Sooooo, it's likely asking if your computer has an Ethernet card... It has a port in it that kinda looks like a phone cord, only like twice the size...

Well, likely it's 56k dialup; ISDN, Dialup, and DSL use your phone line; though DSL is high speed and you have to be semi close to the operations center...
The difference is, dialup uses a standard phone cable, whereas ISDN and DSL use your network port on your system...

Thanks James.......
I am still waiting to see how the friend gets along on her ne one. No show yet.
See the tower for the new one, sets in the middle of my farm. That helps.
She has to have a antenna to heres. Not sure mine does. I am assuming she will be billed monthly on that? Extra for the antenna??///

Had to post some photos elsewhere and didn't want to use my server; so figured i'd put this on photobucket too lol... Ethernet is the red box; telephone is to the right of it lol... about a third bigger I'd say...

mine is the silver level DSL-(whatever that means)- (thru the phone line I guess) BUT the phone company came and put a seperate line in (at their cost) to my computer. I now have MUCH faster service and my phone line is not tied up when I am online---good stuff. Gee I can even look at the photos of cedar hill now.
If the offer is new in your area that is likley why the wait---everyone wants it.
I am glad I have it--here my mom, my sister, my friend and many more have it as well.
No one is disapointed.--and like I say all you have to do is order it---the service provider does all the work.--at least that is how it worked for me.

Yeh, likely your main line was "too old" for DSL service; basically anything prior to 1992... wiring standards :sigh:
I can tell you though, the internet flies when you aren't relying on dialup service lol...

well then I wonder why they did that----this house was built and the electricity was put in in fall of 2004.--But I know for a fact that they ran another line--because they were in my basement, & wanted to know where the phone line came in at and how it went to my computer.--unless they were just adjusting things???? They sure were working down there a long time. But I could of sworn they told me they ran another line......

Well, they could have ran a new outlet and used the wrong terminology; and simply had the outlet going to the main box...
With DSL though it can be odd; they have "line filters" that would have to go on every line, or they put a filter on the main box... too much random crap that has to go on with it lol... thats why I like cable vs dsl (not to mention my cable is 800x faster than my dsl at our appt accross town)
