See the dark spot on the throat in the second picture? That shows that he is Juvenile Male Hummer.

Ohhhhhhhhh Thanks for the info Thorny!!!!! thumbup grin

Lynne YESSSSSSSSSSS I'm very happy they have found the feeders!! clap clap I don't take the camera every time I go out,, simply because I just want to watch them with out being busy trying to get a picture it takes away from the enjoyment of just watching them! I've seen little ones to big ones and so far I believe 4 different kinds,, or maybe just 2 kinds probably male and females,, and I'm loving it,,.. a while back at the store a lady told me she has hummers all winter long until the 2nd week of January,, then they came back in early March,, cool that she has them 10 months out of the year, she said it's been like that for 5 years she's had feeders for 8 but the last five there was a change in duration of stay,, and she's not complaining! lol

How do you know that? Will the spots fade as he gets older?

No, The spots will fill-in, adding more and more spots until he has the thick red throat of an ADULT male Ruby-Throated Hummer next spring

I'm Not sure of their Life span. Average for a wild bird is one to two years but we have records of banded birds living 12 years or more. I reported a Canada Goose that had been banded 11 years before and 15 miles away from where I saw it. I SUSPECT that ONE of my female hummers has been coming to my yard for 6 years now.

Here is a picture I took today of my Juvenile male Ruby-Throated Hummer, Bubba Hum, showing how his red spots are developing. He already has more than he did two weeks ago.

Yes they do band Hummers but not all banders do. You have to have a SPECIAL permit to band Hummers.

I had the same, or thought it was the same wren build a nest on my front porch for 5 years. She didn't come back after that.

Wonder what would make a bird live for 12 years rather than 2. Better quality of seeds? More exercise?

You got good close ups, Diane. I think the first two are the sharpest.

I have used point-and shoot cameras for 6 years. It is NOT the camera, but the photographer that makes the picture. For EVERY picture I post, there are 50-200 that I take that are NOT good enough to post. Look for the unusual, the amazing, the aesthetically pleasing and artistic, in the pictures you take, no matter WHAT type of camera you have. Study art, and the work of famous, well-established photographers to learn what it is that makes their work so GOOD. This will give you the IDEALS to work towards. Use what you have, and as circumstances come along to get better equipment, you will already have the skills and abilities to make great pictures. Take as many pictures as you can as often as you can. My camera holds 1,500 pictures at a time.

Your flower pictures on picli are wonderful! Point-and-shoot cameras have a BIG advantage over my big camera when it comes to MACRO photography. That is the abilty to take EXTREME closeups of TINY objects. They have a Macro setting built into the camera. I have to buy a special lense for my camera, costing hundreds of dollard to do that. That's why I have and ALSO carry several point-and-shoot cameras for Macro photography.
