Diane, I put my window feeder on the kitchen window (I think I already posted that somewhere) and just now when I went downstairs into the kitchen a hummer was drinking out of it. By the time I got over the shock and ran to get my camera he was gone. But they've FOUND IT!!!!!
I only have a few hummers left now - seems most have moved on to parts south already. It's always sad to see them go, but at least there are still 2-3 regulars right now.
Thats clever .......Now shoot some hummers......... i didnt hang mine yet.. I have 3 up now and only a few weeks till frost .
i love the flower baskets an flowers.....They are doing well. Dont they drip on the wall of the house for you ?
I also like the way you have the flower bed in the drive way and the chimeys. Your hosta doesnt get funny like mine in the fall.. Mine look horrible right now.
EVERYONE needs one of these. If I find them in Lowes around here I'm going to buy up some. The hummers love them. I thought they wouldn't like seeing their reflection in the window but they are all using it. And, remember when I was thinking of putting it at the 2nd story window? I saw one flying outside the 2nd story music room window this afternoon.
I agree.........We learned lots this year on hummers and birds, didnt we/ Canon cameras too............
That camera has been going every day here. Neighbors probably thought I was a mental case with a flash light an camera in the pitch dark, taking photos of Borage......LOL
Hubby shakes his head.. cause 10 minutes before I ran out in the dark to hunt a name tag of salvia.
The hummers really like this feeder. It's become their favorite.
Hi BEstoffour. I'm new here but have been a member of a hummingbird group for many years. I maintain 7 feeders through the season. Just thought I would pass this on. Colored water is bad for hummers, it is unnecessary for them to feed, they are attracted to the flower on the feeder not the color of the liquid. ITs a shame that stores still sell it. The best to do is make your own nectar. Cheap and easy. Use 4 cups of water, to one cup of sugar, I boil the water then disolve the sugar in it. I store it in a quart size pitcher in the fridge. In the peak months I make 2 batches a day. Your hummers will love it and they will be safe from chemicals. And you will save money. I can give the the website to the hummingbird organization, they are in South Carolina, they do research and mapping and banding. I have learaned so much from them Hummers are my all time favorite. I am still hosting about 10 Juveniles that are stopping over from there migratory trip! :) Kim
Thorn an Loz have the migration map at the beginning here. I read that story also. I never use red. I have 4 feeders ..Only 3 up.
Read thorns stories .He is a Long time birder and pro.
\ Hi Dodge, I was not trying to be disprespectful, just that some people think the red dye is necessary. I like to pass on all the info I learn about those wonderful little jewels.
I know, All you can do is inform people. The head guy at Hilton pond has a whole article about it. Oh well. I learned years ago just by reading books, they all said no red dye either. A friend of mine did an experiment, USed 2 of the same feeders, one with homade nectar, one with the store bought red stuff. Put in the same area. After a few days the one with the dye was left untouched. Another interesting thing, The orioles at least all the ones I get want only the homemade variety. and the red dye stuff has its perks. The wood peckers dont like it. Too bad they adore all my sugar water feeders. Mostly the downeys, but red bellied and red headed as well love it. They bug the hummers, but they adjust.
I bought a special oriole feeder and my oriloes would not use it. THey prefered my hummingbird feeder with the "flowers" removed so they could drink.
I used to buy the red dye ready made nectar and my hummers liked it well enough but when I read that it was healthier to make your own I began to do so.
I do so love watching them all.
I have 1 downy woodpecker that loves to eat at one of my hummingbird feeders but the hummers do not seem to mind.
________
Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
I don't use the red stuff either because I read that it was bad. I had a separate oriole feeder too, Carol, but they seem to like my hummer feeder better so I don't put the oriole one out anymore!

Glad I am not alone Junie. My silly orioles, we much more into the hummer feeders. MAde me crazy. When they brought there babies back they were on the hummer feeders and ignored the oriole feeder. Did not make the hummers all too happy. I live in the woods thats why I think I have so many downeys. And you can hardly scare them off the feeders, they are not shy!
