I found "Harry" about 2 weeks ago, in a side bed by my front porch. It was still hot then and he was kind of fat from eating a slug or something. I believe hes a baby Eastern Hognose.
Funny living in the woods and on the edge of a river I dont see many snakes. I welcome them, Have a terrible mole and Vole problem.
Anyhoo. hes been there every day. He flattens his head to look all menacing when I say hi.
Hes really small the pic makes him look big I was right over top of him with the camera. LOL
Hes maybe 6 inches. I did see a sibling of his the other afternoon under the Trumpet vine. A toad was next to him. The toad was way too big for him.
Anyway. I went through all the the michigan native snakes on the DNR site and that is what I think he is. Anyone else? And Yes I like snakes! clap

I can't say that I like snakes but I don't mind having them around. I certainly don't kill them. I had a black snake living in the attic one time and didn't like that and was happy when he left.

He is really cute.
I figure he thinks I am the obnoxious human who keeps looking at him. I have not picked him up yet, I dont want to make him leave. My husband says I am nuts. I like all critters, And if he keeps eating slugs and stuff maybe he will grow up and eat voles. prayers

Dont get me wrong, I would freak if I found him in the house, Bur really its very sad that some folks will kill a snake just cause it is a snake, They are so beneficial. Having had a barn and horses, They make great mousers and ratters. I know some folks who have a big resident black rat snake, 6 foot at least, yeah hes scary but harmless, the horses dont mind him. They never have mice or rat problems.
ITs sad to read some of the DNR sites how many are endangered anymore. Harry can stay, he serves a purpose just like all gods creatures. And I feel blessed when the frogs and toads and snakes hang in my gardens.
Red squirrels not so much! haha

~Sigh~ I have not seen harry for three days now, I think he decided there was far too much activity by the front porch. I will miss him and his funny antics, Hopefully I will see him next year full grown.
From all the vole eating he does! clap
